I’m close to needing new tires and a week long TET trip in Norway.

It seems established that running a 140 rear is no problem on thr T7 - does that mean I can go out and buy pretty much any 140/80 tire? I understand different tires will have different longevity etc.

As an example, I can get a 140/80 rear Metzeler mc360 mid-soft for 50% off. I could buy 5 of those for the price of a Motoz adv in 150/70 😅

Thanks fellas!

Depends on a tire. There are couple of examples of Motoz's 140s dropping from the bead when they get a puncture. And that's pretty dangerous. In general 140 should be usable in Tenere but it is on the other end of the suggested tyre width for 4" rim. In general manufacturers design 140s to 2.5" rims in mind and for example Motoz doesn't recommend using their 140s on 4" rim. But this is just Motoz. They probably use narrower carcass than others. But you should check manufacturers suggestions (if they have one) before installing tyre if you want to be sure.

I've understood that the reason for 150/70 tyres are so expensive is that there is usually a difference in carcass vs. 140/80. 150s usually take  more load. I'm considering to change the rim to 2.5" which would give me much more options on tyre widths.

Thanks @Hobes

I went online and took a look at the famous tkc80s. They are rated for the same amount of weight at 140/80 and 150/70, and actually less speed at the 150 width. The 140 is half the price of the 150.

Gonna see what I can find about which rim size they fit!

I have the opportunity to get a used set of TKC 80 with 1400 km done in a AJP PR7 only for 70€, does it worth to buy the used tires for that price?

Interesting about the pricing... i went with the Mitas E07+ 150 to satisfy my own worries about the bead - and it was $80 cheaper than the 140 !!  I'm tempted to order another just to have on hand....

My next pair on deck to use up... E-07+ and TKC 80

I have a 140 scout without the center stripe on it now with a 1/2” lowering link to compensate for the taller tire. Going back to 150 on the Mitas.

That's the exact same set up i just mounted to my T7. Did a few hundred k over the weekend and love them. Sure you get a bit of noise but i'm used to it after running MItas in the past. Running 30 PSI in the front TKC and 35 in the rear E07+. I'll experiment with pressures.... see what works best.

Hopefully this explains a lot (both 140/80 18s).

Both 140/80r18 Motoz Tractionator Adventure. Tube-type on left, tubeless on right. One is going on my DRZ, the other on the T7. Both with tubes. 🙂

I've just been on a big ride in the South Australian Flinders Ranges and one T7 rider had a 120 on the rear!!!!! I didn't get time to check out the overall sizing but he was on standard rims and rode the bike like a boss.  The terrain was very changeable from soft deep sand to rocky creek beds and he never had an issue, his bike was a bit of a 'what's what' in my wants list too.  He'd set it up for off roading, 18000 kms in and never really used it other than trails.  Suspension sorted, steering damper, a few cool upgrades and all very purposeful.  Yet it looked almost standard at a glance - nothing out of the ordinary, but a 120 rear tyre!  I reckon it will have been rim locked of course but considering his set up and how it went, depending on what you intend to ride on (surface wise) there are plenty of options, he had a real gnarly Dunlop enduro tyre on the front.  18 psi was his pressure front/rear.

Well stated. Height and off-road performance are serious reasons for some Riders. I spend the majority of my C riding time on surface streets with short bursts on the interstate and the 150 tire works very well for me in that regard along with the Fire Road/dirt/gravel Roads I travel. If I were to spend more time in serious Off Road riding I would use the 140 Tire.

Running a 140/80-18 Mitas Rally Star E12 on my T7, but re-rimmed the rear wheel to a 18" x 2,50 so it is correct for the 140 width tyre, the OEM 18" x 4,00 doesn't give the correct profile with the narrower tyre, plus I want the option to fit a bib-mousse, also drilled new rim and fitted security bolt.

I'm curious about this as well. I'm looking at buying a set to run front and back so wondering if anyone has run them on the Tenere? Reviews seems great, but a lot of 250 dirtbikes etc.

Been very happy with the RallZ 140. Almost 800 miles on them and barely look worn. Decent on pavement and absolutely amazing on dirt. I wouldn't want to race a SM track on them, but that's not their intension. They hold tarmac just fine and absolutely grab Earth. IMG_0373.jpg.12f1d34fd185e4fcc4a9be38bfa1e67a.jpg

Is your 140 tube or tubeless?

They are tubed. Had considered setting up the bike tubeless, but I sold the Tenere a couple weeks ago. Great motor, but the bike is so damn top heavy. Those 4 gallons are up so high, just never got along with it. If the tanks could be dual and down low, like the older KTM 990, it would be the perfect bike, for me. That said, it was the most comfortable bike to stand and ride that I've ever been on. Picked up a new FE501 as I'm spending more time on enduro tracks and wont be able to travel much tarmac this year with my work schedule. Will be looking for a nice used 990 for longer trips next year when I have more time for distance. But for now, the FE501 is an outrageous naughty minx that absolutely tears the arms off. lol

For those considering the TKC-80

email response from Continental Tire the Americas, LLC Engineering  - safety and performance:

Subject: Motorcycle Tire Question TKC 80s - Fitting a140/80-18 onto a150/70-18 rim?

Thanks for your inquiry regarding TKC80 tires on your Tenere. The load index on both the 140/80-18 and 150/70B18 TKC80 are the same and the 140 actually has a slightly higher speed index (R vs Q) The 150 version is a bias belted construction whereas the 140 version is a bias construction. That means the 150 is a more stout carcass. The 140 rim size range is listed as 2.75” to 3.75” with 3.50 listed as optimal. The 150 size lists a rim range of 3.50” to 4.50” with 4.00” as optimal. I don’t see any problem running the 140 on the Tenere.

The Tusk DSport 140 rear is $74. I've put 1000 miles on it and a slightly greasy enduro race and so far it's impressed me. The front gets a bit squirrely at 75+, but the rear has been great. The knobbies do take a bit of road traction, as it's a bit easier to break traction at WOT. But for the price, I'll change tires twice as often for the off road grip.

Heads up, there is a pretty wide reaching recall out on the TKC-80's.

continental-tkc80-dual-sport-motorcycle-

Continental Tire America is recalling their popular TKC80 dual sport tire, along with a long list of other tires from their ContiGo!, K62 and LB lines. A total of 68,770 tires manufactured from January 06, 2019 to April...

I got a set on my new KTM and have been told the refunding/reimbursement phase starts 7/6/22.

Edit: here are the manufacturer dates for the fronts, one of the bottom 2 I believe:

CONTINENTAL TKC80/2.50-21 M/C 48S  1/06/19 – 4/30/22
CONTINENTAL TKC80/2.75-21 M/C 52S  1/06/19 – 4/30/22
CONTINENTAL TKC80/3.00-21 M/C 51S  1/06/19 – 4/30/22
CONTINENTAL TKC80/90/90-21 M/C 54S  1/06/19 – 4/30/22
CONTINENTAL TKC80/90/90-21 M/C 54T 1/06/19 – 4/30/22

I just ordered new tires. Motoz Dual Venture for the front, RallyZ for the rear. Should be a killer combo. Ill post pics and review after I spoon em on.

Il'll bet you're going to really dig that rear RallZ, I'm finding it's a great 50/50 tire for rocks and sand, with decent, albeit somewhat noisy road manners.  Although currently running a Trailmax Mission front, my plan is to also try the Dual Venture as that looks to be the hot setup for AZ terrain.   Looking forward to your impressions

I have a RallZ rear tire sitting in the garage to replace the Anakee Wild.

You're going to like that tire, I too have a spare one in the garage and am already looking for another. You don't list your location,  but in AZ, the RallZ is a great tire and looks like I'll get at least 6,000 miles of 50/50 wear out of it.

I wanted to try the RallZ but they're hard to find here in the Netherlands especially in 150.
For now i sticked to the 150 and have a new set of Anakee Wild to start my trip with en will be going on this weekend.
Also have a set Heidenau K60 Ranger on the way to try when i'm back.
I know for offroad which i do a lot the 140 might be the better option so maybe when ik destroyed these 2 rear tyres i will test a 140.
Maybe ven before i mount the Rangers because the front last 2 rears.
