Idea of portrait is that the road is going forward so you have more of the line in the picture.
I don't know about other brands but with the Garmin XT it really doesn't matter because there are options for extra information (customizable) and in landscape the info is displayed on the right side of the screen and in portrait on the bottom leaving the same size (more or less) in what the line shows.
I like landscape also for how the menu is laid out but also just a preference.
I had a mount that allowed me to rotate the XT on the fly but other than try it once i never used it and after a while it got some play in it and the XT started to move a little so now it lies somewhere around in the garage.

Yep thats where it should be, ive put the bobble head from camel ADV on mine which makes a huge difference and a rally raid clamp and adjustable screen brackets which also make a good difference, not a huge change but enough. Hopefully pics help!
