Booster Plug

Has anyone tried this, either on the T7 or another bike, and is it a worthwhile addition?

After a very quick look it sounds like it richens your fuel mixtures by under-reading the actual ambient air temperature by 20 degrees C or 35 degrees F . The same could most likely be done with a 5 cent resistor of the correct resistance put in series on the ambient temperature sensor wire (if the IAT sensor is lineal on the T7) .  The colder the ambient air, the more dense the oxygen charge is and more fuel can be mixed with it. So this just tricks your engine management into thinking the intake air is cooler than it really is, therefore adding more fuel which will richen the mixture. God only knows what this will do to your fuel economy, the oxygen sensor should adjust this in closed loop situations so maybe it won't be too bad as the amount of time you're in open loop (rich mixture) won't be for very long.

Hi Whitey66,

I am always amazed and impressed with your technical/engineering knowledge - thanks for the explanations.

Proper tune is the way to go if you are not happy with fueling on the T700.

Used one of these to try and improve the low throttle response of my Tiger 800 xc. As that had a ride by wire system which I could not adjust any other way and riding in slow speed traffic was just horrible. Did improve it a little bit not really worth the money and did not really affect fuel economy. It's somewhat better than a resistor as it only works in the low rev range (a resistor works over the entire rev range, tanking fuel economy).

Having said that: the T7's respond is good at low speeds and if there is too much jerkiness to your liking, you just adjust it yourself to what you want on the bike. No need to spend on an electronic gadget.

Previous was an F800GS. Throttle was snatchy off the bottom. fitted an AF-XIED and problem almost gone ( read Shet loads better ). I wonder if the blokes at Nightrider will do one for the T7.

I believe the booster plug works for a while but from what I have read the ECU "learns" and overides the plug.

Alcohol! No good story starts with a salad.

I don't know the highlighted boosterplug, but I installed a modified IAT sensor (by "belinassu" in ITALY) and I can confirm you:

1. it's not a simple resistor; it follow a non linear curve to confirm the correct stechiometeric ratio between fuel and air;

2. it works pretty well, removing the ON/OOF tedious problem on low gear and low rpm (ie 3.000 rpm in third);

3. it costs around 100 euro and consists of a IAT modified (see photo).

It looks like purchase of IAT sensor is only in Italy. It will not allow selection of other counties.

I contacted Andrea at BelInassu Labs re shipping to Australia, he will do it, he asked for my full address to get correct shipping cost, a guestimate was about 35€.

Seem like a good fix for snatchy throttle issue, I'm pretty interested in getting this IAT, would be great to hear others thoughts on installing one, pro's/ cons etc as I'd never heard of them before.

Is the T7 throttle a closed/open loop system as i bought Kev mod system for my XT660R and it was brilliant, no thottle jerkiness at all. Very simple plug in system which richens the mixture a tad to line up closed and small throttle openings.

I belive KEV’s mod is based in Australia , have you guys over there come across him?

Just did a quickish Google of Kev mod, website is under construction so no contact details, it seems no mod for T7 as yet, couldn't see one for MT-07 either. 😒

I am using a Booster plug now on 2 of my bikes. My T7 and my Duc Desert Sled.  Never as good as a ECU tune with a dyno and competent tuner could be, but it does richen up the mix and make the snatchy throttle smooth out alot.  These are everyday bikes for me, so I want smooth throttle response, good idle and overall good fueling, and for everyday riding. I am not trying to get the absolute best mapping, so these work just fine for my application and are cheap and easy.

The device above works the same as a booster plug, effectively it tricks the ECU with a temp reading that is lower than true ambient and the ECU adds fuel per the curve profile in your map. That is the difference between these 2, same method (using air temp I mean) but the temp scales could be different.

Hi, there is a guy in Germany who tested this device on a KTM. He found an enrichment effect (=smoother throttle..?) in the lower and mid rev range. But also in the higher revs, where the mix is already rich (AFR about 13). Here the effect was an "over" enrichment (AFR 12 ... or so). So in theory there might be a possible downside of washing down the oil in the combustion chamber or thinning the motor oil etc.  See graph at 19:55.....  Have an nice weekend, Olli

honestly, I think you might as well get a decent remap...this seems like money wasted. stock sensors work just fine no need to fiddle with them unless that's what you're into 🤠

I had a XT660Z when living in Australia and added the Kev mod. It totally transformed the engine for me. So i am a believer that this simple plug and play mod can do wonders to low rev snatchy throttle. at least it worked on the single cylinder tenere

I used a booster plug on a 2016 BMW f800gs and on my 2019 Triumph 1200 Scrambler

The device works as advertised....worked well to improve off idle transition and throttle response on the F800gs.....

Was less dramatic improvement on my Triumph 1200 Scrambler but did improve things....and as observed by someone else...Im pretty sure the ECU learned its presence and overode most of its effectiveness after a while...wasnt surprised as the Triumph ecu is a sophisticated ecu capable of learning.

They are inexpensive compared to a tuner or full reflash...but are limited to what they are ....a fairly simple device that fools the ambient air temp sensor to fatten things up at certain ranges....dont expect big dramatic gains....and your bike may be smart enuf to overule it eventually
