Seat not fitting?

I took off my saddle to fit a “Cool cover” and the seat will not line up with the 2 hex-bolt holes when I try to put it back on. I can wedge the passenger seat on which locks the whole thing in place. Is riding without the hex bolts holding on the front seat a bad idea? It all seems solid and stable. Am I being an idiot (very probable) and missing something?

I’m guessing the cool cover will need time and encouragement to compress, but even with the cover off, the bolts are not keen to line up. I’ll probably just ditch the bolts; it’s all weight saving innit!
