Help. Plastic bolt stuck in acerbis tank

Oxxa

Question

Hello,

for some reason this bolt is not coming out and is spinning in place. I think the nut has detached from the acerbis tank due to heat.

any ideas how to fix it?

thanks

You need to piss around with it until it bites into the tank again, can you prise it outwards with a car trim tool while spinning it out, slow or fast with an impact driver? Or tap it back into the hole. Try spraying freeze/release spray to soak down to the threads. I think very finally I would rip it out and put a new timesert coil in or something.

Does it bite into the tank if i pull or push on the bolt?

It can do. It looks like it’s just bonded in and possibly serrated. It’s trial and error. I think it will probably be a right pain in the arse. But hopefully you can remove it without the tank or the panel being damaged. Warming the area of the tank may grip the insert but I’m not sure I’d want to try that in case it softens too much. My first attempt would be the gentle prying upwards while unscrewing the bolt, squirting the spray under it to get to the threads. I think it’ll come looking at the pic. Then you can clean the hole, use grips to get the insert off and rebound it back in. Use a grease to put the screw back in (or new one).

Looks to me like  either the insert wasn't installed correctly by Acerbis, or the bolt was possibly over tightened or cross threaded when it was installed which would break the insert free from the tank.

I agree with Dougie's suggestions on how to get the bolt out.

Those inserts are put in either with heat or vibration. They have serrations on them so they won't turn when you tighten the screw. You can break them free if you over-tighten them.  The only solution is to get it out with heat and/or force. Then use JB Welt to lock the insert into place.

I had a similar problem with my Acerbis chain guide.  The screw stuck to the insert and the insert came out of the plastic.

I now put antiseize on those screws...

Did you ever get the stuck fastener out?

Not yet.

i tried pulling or pushing on it but still stuck. My mechanic said we have to remove the nut inside the plastic and glue it back into place. Dont want to do it, ill wait for winter when the plastic hardens lol

Were you able to try with an impact driver? Maybe pry up gently under the side panel while using the impact.

Also try putting some penetrating oil around the screw head in hopes some of it will get down to the threads.  You most likely are dealing with a corrosion issue from different metals.   Heat would be best if you weren't dealing with a plastic tank!
