is this realistic ?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone I am looking for your opinion here...

I have seen such of a wide range of miles guys/gals do in one day I am looking for inputs and opinions whether or not this is a good idea given the information below. I am planning my first long ride, I would like to know what your threshold where it stop being pleasant? and what increment of time you do in a row before having to stop for a stretch and If I have a unrealistic goal. I have done half day rides to full day but with lots of rest and F&^ing around along the way, I was never in a rush, I never had to be somewhere at a set time. I am planning on driving my Tenere to work if the weather cooperate. On the way there I am not that concern, its a 610km (379 miles) one way but I will do the first 215km (134miles) the night before which leave me 395km (245miles) for the next day. I will leave at 6am and I have to be there for noon (preferably 11am) which give me 5 to 6h, it should be plenty of time with at least 1h for accumulative rest stop along the way. On the way back 10 days later I want to take the lake superior drive which is beautiful, it's a 712km (442miles) in one day, I will leave at 7am and I have the day to make it home. Is this too ambitious? will I hate myself for doing this ? My main concern is my stock seat, it's not great I have padded shorts which I hop they will help but ya I am looking for your opinion and experience. I know I know get a comfort seat but it's not a priority right now I don't want to spend the money so it's not a option at this time.

Thank,

So its clearly your experience to call it. My experience when I went to Dawson City and Tok Alaska in 2015 on my Super T was max 10hr days, stopping every 2-2.5 hrs for a water/walk break. It's 2400 kms to Whitehorse from Edmonton. 3 days of 800kms each just to get there. I found stopping more often for water/food/exercise kept us alert and engaged. Once in the north, we had variety of days/hrs of travel. I've also done multiple day trips from Edmonton to the eastern slope of the rockies and back - most being 700-800km days. Stopping frequently. I'm used to the distances. What you are proposing sounds like a nice day for me, but maybe an extremely long day for some. Take your time, stop often, and stay hydrated and you will be fine. Enjoy!

If you got to do it then you will do it.  None of that sounds pleasureable, but that may not be the point.  If you're doing it to save money, then realize there are tradeoffs.  If you are doing it just because it is different then the pain can be pleasureable, no pain no gain as it were.   I once drove 10hr each way in a topless jeep in rocky mtn late fall with artic gear and motorcycle helment on with a hose from the heat vent into my suit just for the hell of it.

My only real advice is stay alert.

will do,

lol your that kind of guy ehn ... that sound like a experience .... I want do it for the experience, and get some miles on the bike ... I love to ride but I am busy in life, so I can't (have a hard time) wasting time to do long ride for no reason, so if I can find a opportunity to hit two bird with one stone I do it. Like this case go to work with the bike, during hunting season I will utilize my bike to go hunting or if I have to go pick up some parts out of town I will take my bike ect...

I've done back-to-back 500mi days 8-9hrs a day on the Tenere all interstate/ highway it wasn't pleasant(stock seat).  With an aftermarket seat that I find comfortable, I won't do that again.  For me no more than 6 hours and limited interstate time.  The ride and miles you posted are doable but you'll have to figure out what works for your riding style.  Also, interstate @80mph will suck down the fuel so my stops were refueling.

I have done a few multi day ( 7 - 9 ) rides.

Usually a round 800km to the starting point ( Melbourne or Brisbane ) followed by 6 - 7 350 to 400km days on back roads, forest tracks, etc.

On the long bitumen stretches I will briefly stand every hour with a 10 minute break every 2 hours.

There is a road safety campaign in Oz - "don't trust your tired self"

A longer stop for a light lunch is usually after about 4 hours.

I have the rally seat and use Moto Skiveez but it is still a pain in the arse.

I am considering using my Air Hawk for longer rides.

It helped a lot when I had the F800

Too many variables and unknowns to give you any honest advice.  As @Hibobbsaid, just do it. If you end up hating life from it then you'll know why and know what to change if you opt to do it again.

I have spent 10 hours on the saddles and done 836km with 5 small breaks (5mins) and 1 long break 20mins, and this was thru some freaky weather.

I did not want to be on the bike the next day, but then it is doable. Just depends on how much you want to push yourself really!

I wouldn't figure a set number of hours or miles. Some days you might feel good and can do a lot of miles and other days you might not feel like a long day. The objective is to have fun, not how many miles you can cover.  The stock seat is probably the most limiting factor.

Riding long distance is uncomfortable on any bike until you get your body used to it. Ive ridden the t7 all over on multi day trips. If I haven't ridden any distance for a while I start hurting after a few hundred miles but usually try to plan 500 miles a day. I rode 300 miles on the highway today and started to feel it after around 200. Thats all highway though and I haven't ridden that far on the road in a while. Off road I can do longer because you stand more.

For myself, the BIG difference is the type of riding. I have no issues doing an 8-10 hour day where it’s backroads , some off-road and pavement to connect the dots. Lots of standing, and things to keep my mind entertained.
For that type of riding, since it’s slower speeds , 500km is a grind day. 350km is much more enjoyable and I see more.

2 lane paved roads that have some curves and things to see, about the same as above (but if I’m doing that, I’m likely finding gravel somewhere in mix in). On the larger highways however, being at 100km/h+ in a straight line for more than a couple hundred kms , I find it really tiring on the Tenere. Wind noise and the uncomfortable seat are hard to ignore.
Plan lots of breaks , which you will have to do because as Jesse mentioned above, the tenere fuel consumption is much worse at sustained high speeds.
It’s all preference of course. Generally though, the more scenic a route is, the easier long kms are for me. To sum it up, I live in Ontario , and if I was to drive to the east coast of Canada (1400km by main highway) I would take several days to do it and explore backroads, or fly out and rent a bike. I wouldn’t be interested in 700km days via the highway .

If you have a lot of highways miles to get done in a short time, take the load off your butt!
