Chain too tight while loaded?

feys

Question

Hi everyone,

I'm new here, and I hope this is the right place for me to post my question.
I recently performed my first chain adjustment by following the instructions in the manual. I placed the bike on the sidestand and lifted the backend to remove as much load as possible (other than the normal bike load). I then adjusted from the end of the chain guide (the plastic bit) to the middle of the chain, pressing down on the chain to achieve a 45 mm distance between the two points.

Everything seemed just fine initially. However, when I load the bike (I weigh 100kg), the chain feels really snug. I've seen a method by ARiemann1 where he loads the bike first and then adjusts the chain. Given that I'm above the 75kg the bike is rated for, would it be better to use his method? or Should I add a little more slack overall?

Also, is it normal for the chain to be tight when loaded? I can still wiggle it up and down a tiny bit, but not a lot.

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Think I saw Cory at camel adv do a video on output shaft/swingarm pivot/rear spindle in alignment method

It's my preferred to find correct chain tension and if there's a vid will save typing

Welcome aboard.

I adjust roughly to the manual.

I am about 110kg with all the gear on and carry around 20kg when travelling.

You only need a little slack when the rear is compressed.

i think i just watched that video, its where he removed a bolt to make the complete line to "simulate" max tension right? - he does however not show how much tension the chain has after he adjusted it to his spec so i was still looking for answers! 😄

that at least puts my mind at ease alittlebit - i was/am kinda worried stuff just breaks haha
i think i should probably aim for the higher number of the manual specs (48) i just went with 45 cus it was somewhat in the middle, but its probably the move to do 48 when youre a heavier dude
the slack i have loaded is not alot and it does feel tight but im not sure if its too tight or not, i would say i can probably move it 5-10mm in both directions depending on how much force i put in i would say

and also thank you for the welcome, glad to be here

Yep sounds like it. When all three bits are in line that's the peak of the arc, the longest it will be.

Put a bit of ease in it at that point and that's the tightest it will get

You only have to do this once. then you can measure or cut a piece of wood for future reference if need be

i will for sure do this the next time, just have to get my hands on a center stand, but until then ill probably just give it abit more slack overall now and hope for the best 🙂 much love for the info 🙂
