Weird sound from rear axle

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a weird noise coming from the rear axle of the bike. The sound was present before I installed a new tire, I thought it had something to do with the old worn-out tire but the noise stayed even after new tire and balancing of the wheel. In the audio I'm riding at about 100 km/h and pulling the clutch in. Braking doesn't seem to effect the sound at all. I had my phone recording audio in my back pack while riding. Dealer checked all the bearings and the axle it self was in good condition and lubricated well. I also installed a new brake disc and new brake pads 1 week ago

What do you think it might be?

Doesn't sound scary bad. You ruled out the tire, bearings, brake... whats left? (Chain noise)

Some guys hear the chain rubbing on the rear chain guide if you installed one. Others hear the simple plastic bearings that guide/limit the chain up/down closer to the front sprocket.

Me... I am old and don't hear well. Ignorance is bliss.

I second everything Hibobb said. Everything makes noise. Wheel bearings, tires, chain, chain guide, brake disk, all spinning at 100km/h…if you didn’t hear noise there’d be something wrong with your hearing.

Do you wear ear plugs? If not you really should start. I used to get ringing in my ears after long days and now I don’t, plus they get rid of all the small scary drivetrain and engine timing noises and let you focus on the  ride.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'm just going to eventually get used to it. The bike is still under warranty after all.

Yeah the amount you hear when your plugs aren’t in are manifold.

I have a similar noise; was thinking it was the tires.
