ABS Mode settings

Question

Hello, I have a 2024 Tenere and from my understanding the ability to adjust the ABS modes Rear or both is just for the 2024 model - I could be wrong.

 

Either way, I have three settings in the ABS mode ABS ON, REAR ABS OFF (OFF ROAD), and ABS OFF (OFF ROAD). When off roading I'm not sure what 'off road' mode to select - just the rear or both. I wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this?

@kittersa Welcome to the Forum.  Sounds like you're new to off road riding, you're in the right place, lots of help here on the board.  This video starting at 1:00 is a must view and practice technique if you're going to be riding off road.  Suggest to do it on a smaller bike to get the technique down then move up to the T7, but either way, you need to be comfortable with applying the front brake.  There is a debate as to which is best, ABS front only or ABS completely off.  My take with 50 years of off road experience is to ride without any ABS and learn to apply the brakes without electronic intervention.  Full disclosure, the closest I've come to dropping my T7 is when I forgot to turn the ABS ( both wheels off on a 2021) off and the computer wouldn't allow the bike to stop and kept releasing the front wheel.  Good luck and have a blast with your T7!

If you are new to off roading, I would suggest just rear abs off. Then you don't have to worry about grabbing to much front.

Thanks for comments. I've watched a bunch of that guys videos since owning the Tenere, he's class. 

@AZJW yea makes sense to learn without ABS, I owned a '93 XR650L for many years which was absolute bare bones. Many years of owning bikes but this is the first with ABS so just interested to know what setting people use. I'll turn off ABS completely - that's what I've been doing to date.

Cycle world, Damon Bradshaw & Ryan Villopoto agree, ABS off in the dirt. 

 


Yamaha’s Ténéré 700 is mostly free of electronic rider aids and other digital technology, but gets a TFT display and updated ABS settings for 2024.

Offroad you want to turn it all off. Spend some time on doing drills and learn to feel what the bike does when locking up, and how much it takes. This is especially true if you change the tires out for something with more grip in the dirt. The ABS simply cannot handle it, and it WILL let go when you least need it to.

How do I know this? Well, I have had it let go on me when trying to navigate slowly down a steep rocky section (forgot to turn it off) and I've also ran off the road coming around the corner while trail-braking. Luckily I just damaged some plastics and got a bit bruised. I run Michelin Trackers both front and rear and the grip they provide just simply fools the ABS unit.
