Colorado: Shelf Road/Phantom Canyon

On October 10 I bought a brand new 2024 Yamaha Tenere 700. Yesterday I did the first oil change at 616 miles (Yamalube 10w-40 synthetic). Today I waited for the temp to get near 50 and then loaded up to go see some pretty places on a beautiful fall day.

Started out the way I start every trip away from my home, on US 50 either east or west. This time it was east. I tucked behind the tiny windscreen and hauled butt. Left turn onto Fremont County Road 69. Gravel turning to dirt turning briefly to chunder before returning to pavement when you pop out of Red Canyon Park (a City of Canon City park) and turn left onto Garden Park Road. You follow the civilized pavement for just a minute, then drop down a right turn onto the Shelf Road.

I have lived in Colorado since 1986 and in the upper Arkansas Valley since 2000. In all that time I never saw the Shelf Road. It's really awesome. Beautiful. A great motorcycle ride.

It ends in Cripple Creek, CO where you can go lose your paycheck if that's your bag. I turned right and went straight to Victor, past the massive gold mine on the high slopes of Pikes Peak.

Phantom Canyon had a railroad back when a man and a box of dynamite could do almost anything. It's really pretty. A couple pictures, but taking pictures is a bit of a waste of time there really. It's just nice to roll along through the woods under the looming canyon walls.

I really like this motorcycle. 140 miles with some relatively challenging terrain and I'm tired but not so bad that I couldn't rock another 50 if I needed to. And it's still box stock. I haven't had time to change anything. Those tires are not ideal, especially the front. And I want a steering damper. Cockpit fits me really well after I twisted the bars up so the grips are a bit higher. I stand 80% of the time.
