Rear axle direction

Recommended Posts

As pointed out by someone much clever than me, the rear axle direction seems like it should be reversed.  I.e the nut should go on the right ( brake side).

This is because to loosen it you can put your foot on it and when tighten it pulls the wheel forward against the chain adjuster.

Also you get more room when on the side stand.

I can see  to reason not to do this?

Let us know how this goes, i.e., reversing axle. I would like nut on the right side. Why do you think the designers placed it on left? Gotta be a reason, I imagine.

Generally it's easier to insert the spindle from the right, as it passes through the rear brake caliper mount first, which makes getting it through the wheel easier after that

I ended up removing the rear axle, spinning it 180 degrees  and swapped the axle nut over to the right hand side. Every time I tightened the axle nut when it was on the left hand side, it would slip and over tighten the chain. Moving the axle nut to the right hand side fixed the problem.
