hack turn signal

Question

are the wires to turn signal  normaly hot -if so - could you hack into them to connect cigarette light that has a 6amp capacity to power a air pump

The auxiliary/cigarette connector allows a maximum current of 2 A.

 

See owner manual section 3.

Wires to the front running/parking lights are normally "hot", and are switched power (only powered on when the key is on). If you take power from here your pump will run, but if the draw is too much for lights and pump, the fuse will still blow. 

 

Turn signal power goes like this.

  • Fuse block to turn signal relay and brake light switches
  • Signal relay to turn signal switch/hazard button
  • turn signal switch to turn signal
  • Ground

If you take power from the turn signal circuit anywhere after the signal relay, you will get power that "flashes" (the pump will run off/on like the flashers do).

If you take power from the turn signal circuit before the relay, you will get constant power. As long as the turn signals or brakes are not activated, only the pump will be running on that fuse. 

 

Many ways to skin this cat. If you want switched power....

  • Add a circuit with a fuse somewhere on the fuse block (I'm not at the bike right now to give a location or an exact wire, I can do that later and post it up if needed). Best option, lets you use any fuse size needed and allows for proper gauge wires.
  • Take power from before the turn signal relay. Second best, uses the 7.5 amp fuse. Allows you to use either/only the pump or turn signals/brakes. 
  • Take power from the running light circuit. Least preferred, uses a 7.5 fuse but lights and pump will both be running off the same fuse. Not sure if wire gauge will be an issue. 
  • Change the fuse for the lighter socket to suit. Not recommended. Wires are not the proper gauge, use it and the bike could burn to the ground. 

Here is another option. This is what I did, it ticked a few boxes for me (to run the pump and have an option to charge the battery). Since I figured I would be using the the pump (Antigravity Micro-Start) for short intervals, I wired a "SAE to Ring Terminal" directly to the battery with an inline fuse.

Chelink SAE to Ring Terminal Quick Connect/Disconnect Plug Harness ...

I tucked the quick connect under the right side panel and made a proper length connector for the pump so it reaches both wheels (which also gives enough length to use on another bike if needed). Having the connector also allows for charging. Using non-switched power in this instance doesn't matter to me (it would matter if something was charging through a usb port or lighter socket, then draining the bike's battery is a possibility). If I'm using the pump for an extended period, the bike will be running. Nothing else will be running off this circuit to drain the battery. The system uses the proper gauge wires and proper size fuses for the intended purpose. I use it often with no issues (I spend most of the time off-road, aired down pretty low. I take the pump out to air up roadside if I have to go on the highway for more than 50 km). Simple enough to wire to the bike, with the cost of the parts being minimal. 


Of course, if the lighter socket is what you prefer or need because that is the only type of plug in your pump has, there is a way. Up to you. PM me if you have a question. We also should post the results of what you do so the resolution is out there for others to use for themselves.

They are not hot. Even if they were, they are only 24-26 ga(?)... so only good for about 0.5amp.

Heey that's a good point. Would you suggest tapping maybe one of the spare aux light for the OEM 12v socket? I noticed on your bike in one of the videos you have a few posi taps in the aux light wires.

I'm not a posi-tap fan, I prefer to properly wire things whenever possible. Those were installed at 11pm in the parking lot of a Vegas casino so we could head out in the wee hours of the morning.

It's pretty easy to run wires to the battery on the T7. There's enough room to feed wires behind without removing the fuel tank.
