Hi,

I mounted a fairly cheap three-button wired controller to the left-hand side of the handlebar with two main functions:

1. Being able to zoom in & out my Android navigation

2. Relocated the trip computer switch which is by default located in the most useless location on the bike, next to the throttle.

Here's a quick video how it works:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6qDM_CdR7k

Here is a quick DIY with parts, estimated total cost for the whole thing is around 40EUR.

Disclaimer: I have to give all the credits to the following two posts that have the above features implemented but separately:

1.

2. http://www.dirtbikejesus.net/android-handlebar-remote-for-less-than-the-price-of-a-beer/

I took the above two and joined them using a fairly cheap three-button controller.

First, the list of all the main parts:

1. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33033754387.html - the three button controller (about 25EUR)

2. https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/push-button-switches/7346710/? - as the trip computer switch MUST be a NC (normally closed) button and all the black buttons on the controller are NO (normally open) I had to replace one of the button used as the trip computer switch. It also acts as a nice distinction between buttons. (5EUR)

3. Resistors (all three are less than 1 EUR)

 - 1/4W 680ohm
 - 1/4W 220ohm
 - 1/4W 1500ohm

4. https://www.amazon.de/-/en/gp/product/B0018PW12Q - headphones cable to plug into the phone (10EUR with shipping)

Other necessities: Soldering iron, heatshrink wrap, electrical tape, some old wires, zip ties, small piece of 2 or 3mm aluminum, etc.

Here are a few details to watch for:

1. I did not use the handlebar clamp of the three-button controller as it would put it too far to the right (next to the mirror and clutch mount) and hard to reach while holding the grip. Instead I made a little bracket out of 2mm aluminum:

image.png.76e93511e62c9fa979557645f7b3ce8c.png

2. I replaced the bottom button with a NC button to be used for the trip computer switch. I used black silicone to close the back of the controller and make everything weather proof. All six wires go out of the controller into a longer heatshrink wrap.

3. The four wires of the top two buttons go onto the resistors and the 4-pole headphone jack as described in the post above. Here's a copy of the diagram just in case:

I made this part ahead of time in the kitchen:

image.thumb.png.e6d189a49c0f0d892c568d53082132a6.png

4. The two blue wires from the red button go to the other side of the handle bar and splice into the existing wiring coming out of the trip computer switchgear.

image.thumb.png.3a41d8ddab1f6655ca0971ece39b4f98.png

This part is a bit tricky. The original article splices into the wiring connector under the right side panel. However, that area is so crowded with wires and connectors I was not able to get to it without removing the tank which I did not want to. So I cut open the wire wrap coming out of the switch gear and was surprised to find the exact wire I needed to cut is already soldered/spliced there for some reason in its stock form (see photo above). So I didn't feel so bad cutting that and soldering the two wires coming from the red button onto them.

Note: This way you actually keep the original switch button fully functional as either of them now opens the circuits that is normally closed (NC) and changes the display (see video).

Tape everything with black electrical tape and tidy it up using zip ties and voila, you have a nearly stock look with extra functionality on your left handle bar.

NIce job.  Looks good.  I wish I had something I needed to zoom in on.

@Spuzvica Nice one. Wanted to try with my headset and discovered it won't work with most apps 😄 Looks like it is specific to Locus Maps...

What is the 3 button set are you using? Do you have a link to buy one of this? Most buttons I found on Amazon or ebay are either crap or pure racing ones (including the price).

I know Locus and OsmAnd can be configured that volume buttons act as zoom in/out, don't know about others. But it's good pointing out that this is not exactly a universal solution.

Would be nice to know if the new Drive Mode Dashboard (which is aimed at a much more expensive bluetooth controller) would support this fairly simple method.

I was tempted to buy the carpe iter bluetooth controller but did not for two main reasons:

1. I don't know how to mount it in a convenient way on the left side of the handlebars.

2. It's another battery I have to worry about being charged.

I tried with google maps, ways and Locus. Only locus worked (or maybe there are some settings somewhere but I didn't find).

Did you test what would additional buttons do?

According to android specs you can have up to 4 buttons: https://source.android.com/devices/accessories/headset/plug-headset-spec

Circuit de test du casque de référence 1

I wonder whether there are Navigation apps that support Blutooth HID (protocol used in Blutooth joysticks and game controllers). That would be not too complex to integrate with some arduino 🙂

I noticed Nomad Sweden has its Carpe Iter controller mounted horizontally https://youtu.be/V9C_9IfHtlg?t=748

I knew that three buttons were possible on android but not four, interesting.

I guess they are originally aimed at music players:

1. Volume up

2. Volume down

3. Next song

4. Play/pause

I am sure any app could implement functionality for all four. But I only know of OsmAnd and Locus where you have to explicitly enable "use volume buttons for zoom in/out" feature in settings.

I watched the Nomad episode with carpe iter controller and I really don't like that position, you basically have to take the entire hand off the bar to use it.

I thought the same too.
However, it is entirely possible to place the controller to the left of the switch unit, with a little patience and hairspray ;-)).

Nice Peter
Am I thinking of the same solution as you? Did you connect directly to the battery, or did you use the sockets that are available.
Was it problematic to install it? You wrote hairspray? 🙂 Are you happy with it?

Hi,

I used the connectors on the right side of the tank.
And no: the installation went smoothly after I temporarily made the handles movable with hairspray and moved the switch unit slightly to the right and screwed it there.
In principle, I am already satisfied - however, the remote control only works with DMD2 and the connection to the smartphone also breaks off from time to time.

I got my today, try to connect it to the 3 pins on the left first, no power, sen the rigth, no power =(, DOA ? hmm
I used below to connect. but no power on the unit =( . I also try to move the instrument cluster to right, and  the device close to the handel, but then  but then there was a gap when I was going to screw it together, so it didn't quite go together =(

Edit :
So i tested to connect directly to the batteri, hand whopps is was light. 🙂
So if I understand you correctly, you used hairspray and sprayed this under the handles to move them out?

Yes, but I only compressed the rubber grip about 1 cm to the left. With the shifting of the left indicator unit there was enough space for the controller.

Just bought the CI Adv. Controller @Peter_W how happy are you with the setup ? Is it possible to reach the turn signal thingy?

After I got rid of the iPhone to always primarily connect to the CI controller, it runs stably with the Android device I use.
I can easily get to the turn signal switch.
Have fun with it!!
By the way, I find it nicely explained here by Nomad Sweden (https://youtu.be/lu004ugMP4A)..

I didn't want to start another thread as it's pretty much the above install.  Just after some advice after installing a single push button switch (NC) on the clutch side of the bars to toggle through the trip functions, to replicate the select toggle on the throttle side. I tapped into the black/white wire as above however I've lost function of the original select switch, and after I stop toggling through the functions with the new button, if I stop on one of the trips it will reset it to zero. It toggles through the options no worries with each press of the button. The switch I bought is just a small 2 pin weatherproof momentary NC switch. Any thoughts?
