brake pedal - can it be bent back without breaking?

wncrider

Question

I have read on this forum that the brake pedal is easily bent. I can confirm that now. However my question is - can I just bend it back without breaking it?

It's not too far out of whack and sort of still usable but it needs to be straightened or replaced soon one of these days.

You will have to remove it and heat it to get back into shape if you bend it cold you will weaken the metal.

I’ve kicked mine back straight a couple times with no issues. I’m sure they made it of mild steel for just that reason. I don’t understand why ppl buy fancy after market aluminum ones that are more likely to snap if abused enough and are harder to weld for typical hobbyists

The brake pedal is made of a grade of mild steel that will take a bit of bending/re-bending before it work hardens. I highly doubt it has been heat treated. You will likely be able to bend it and bend it back multiple times before it finally fatigues and breaks off. If the bend is quite sharp and short, like a kink, then it won't take too many of those before it breaks off trying to bend it back. If its a long radius bend, then you'll be fine. If you are really worried about it, you could heat it up with a torch and bend it back, or bend it back and then heat the area around the bend to a dull red and let it air cool, throw some paint on it and then re-install it. Good as new.

I think I have Yamaha disease...
