Modify OEM Yamaha rear rack

Hello all,

I just got my T7 last week and I love it! I want to put a topcase on it to put my hemlet in and to have stuff in it for short travels.

I have been looking all over for a suitable rear rack. The one I like most is the OEM rear rach, except for the downward tubes that run to the passenger footpegs.

Has anyone thought of cutting off those downward tubes? I don't see it doint that mucht for strength... I think it would look a lot better without those tubes. What are yout thoughts?

Ride safe!

Those lower tubes are there for a reason to help support the rear frame of the bike from the additional load from the top case. If you cut them off it won’t make the rack itself any weaker, but you could end up bending the rear frame of the bike with the added cantilevered load hanging off the rack.

I wouldn’t cut them off.

Thanks for the reply. There are many aftermarket rear racks that dont use those downtubes. I agree it would stiffen up te rear frame. But I dont plan on riding fully loaded with a passenger...

GIVI makes a rear rack without downtubes. I believe they also developed the Yamaha OEM rack. They should know what they are doing I guess. Maybe just buy the GIVI rack instead...
