Bits falling off!

Recommended Posts

After 6,000 miles, I've had a few bits fall of my T7 Rally.

Primarily bolts of the front fork (including the plastic screw from Rally Raid) and the Akrapovic side cover.

I do a lot of off-road on rough tracks and recently noticed my front fairing moving up and down in a way it didn't before.

Turns out that a bolt holding the plastic fairing to the frame had fallen out and on further research discovered it had caused the petrol tank cover to break.

Hopefully Yamaha will replace it as the bolt on the other side was not secured with thread glue or a spring washer.

Glue up your own bolts or maybe you'll suffer the same fate.20211001_183117.thumb.jpg.3623760944153539edc1d077e25ef472.jpg20211001_183117.thumb.jpg.3623760944153539edc1d077e25ef472.jpg

I have found a few bolt lose but only after I took mine to a dealer for the first service. I tighten them and after I took my bike again for the second service, I found a few lose bolts again. The dealer is not following Yamaha's recommendations.

If you look at the repair manual, it shows that you need to use a medium strength "Threadlocker," or "Locktight," or equivalent product on body panel bolts and many other bolts and nuts around the bike. The T7 vibrates worst than a Harley on steroids. I've owned a lot of bikes in my time and this bike vibrates more than any other bike I've owned or ridden. So I understand why Yamaha requires Locktight in many bolts and nuts.

My recommendations is that you follow Yamaha's recommendations and specs.  I personally would not use a glue gun, but hey that is up to you.

Thanks for sharing your shared experience @Yasenia but sad to hear you've had a similar experience.

I think we should NOT assume the factory or dealer applied Locktight (which I did use but used the words 'thread glue' as a more general term) where necessary and apply it ourselves!

Glad I realised this before my trip to Morocco next week!
