ABS Problems?

PNGL

Recommended Posts

Hello all.
I've developed an issue of sorts. My ABS warning light has started randomly flashing the last few times I've gone riding. The ABS still works, whether the warning light is flashing or not, as my forgetting to go offroad mode BEFORE hitting the gravel has confirmed. The strangest part is that it even does it when the bike is in offroad mode. I can't see how it can have an ABS issue, when the ABS isn't even on. It's always after I've been riding for 20-30 minutes and suddenly, apropos of nothing, the warning light is flashing at me. It's happened on and off road with the ABS on and off. Strange, to say the least.
I will point out that this all started after I installed an ABS sensor guard on the rear sensor. However, I didn't even remove the sensor. I took out the bolt and installed the guard with it's new, longer bolt. The sensor remained in place the whole time. Thoughts? Advice?

"What the hell's a 'farkle'? Oh... I... have all the farkles." 😑🤦🏻‍♂️

I've had a similar thing happen. When the front tire gets worn pretty bad and I brake really hard, I think the abs gets confused about the difference in wheel speed front to rear

Try taking the sensor guard off and seeing if the problem goes away. I can imagine that a metal sensor guard might interfere with the hall effect sensor that is the ABS wheel speed sensor.

The other thing I would check is that the clearance between the sensor and the slotted ring on the wheel is in spec.

Is any part of the new guard magnetically charged?  Any magnetic material near the sensor can cause harm.  Do what Liquidape suggests and remove the guard and see if it works.

Please let us know what the repair is.

Nope. It's an aluminum guard and an aluminum spacer with a longer screw. That's it.

I'll take it off before my ride tomorrow and see if that makes a difference.

  • 1 year later...

Did anyone get to the bottom of this as my ABS light is now flashing randomly?

Otherwise brakes are working fine.

I'm not sure. I pulled out both ABS sensors checked them out and re-installed them and it never happened again. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Just did a 3 day ride with intermittent abs flashing and at times stayed on for a few hours, brakes working fine.

Seems to have gone away now

check the air gap. this is a common issue on any bike if sensor is sitting too far away from the ABS ring

Any dirt or grime in the sensor slot may move it out too far to rear the sensor.

I have the rear metal guard and have no issues.

Also check if sensor has damage from removing wheels and leaving sensor attached (brake disc can damage sensor if rough hand the wheel out with sensor remaining in place.
