Rear Axle - Does it matter ?

JB700

Question

Which side the axle nut is on?

Yamaha fit it on the sprocket side, but can you reverse the axle and fit the lock nut on the disc side, like the pic?

Gilles AXB chain adjusters show the axle reversed, with the nut on the disc side

It doesn't matter. Some people turned it around because it's easier to loosen on the trail with a short wrench.

As Ray said, also it’s easier to loosen the nut on the side stand side….too many sides there 😐….plus if you’re removing the wheel by raising it against the side stand it’s easier to pull and replace the axle on the opposite side.

So why do Yamaha put the nut on the sprocket side, in the factory?

They will have build drawings and procedures and I guess that is what they decided and will follow.

Try it the other way round and if your wheel falls off I’ll put my hand up and say I was wrong 😉
