Waiting for dealer to prep my 2023

Recommended Posts

If someone had told me that by 2020 EVERYTHING would be VERY screwy with purchasing almost everything, I'd have been very doubtful. But what I've witnessed is incredibly nuts. I found a T7! But...It's been very touch and go with the dealer. There are literally only 3 in the entire state of Texas and all are spoken for.

This is so much different from the last motorcycle I bought, which  was in 2018 and the process was FAST, pleasant (got my DRz400s OTD for LESS than MSRP!) and had PLENTY of units to choose from. Thanks to this scamdemic it took me 3 years to just find a Tenere...but I'm still waiting on the dealer to get the unit assembled and prepped for it's ride to it's new home. And no more bargains! If you want one, you pay, EVERYTHING they want to tack on as well. OR walk. This is by far the most stressful buying experience I've ever had. I just pray my T7 was built well enough to not need warranty service.

The dealer doesn't have ANY accessories in stock for ANY Tenere. They are a HUGE dealer too. Really the 2 big things I'm definitely going to want is a rear rack (I can't believe there is not a place to bungie a back/box from the factory!) and some sort of engine guard/protector. I really love the ways these look (stainless and all)

Touratech Engine Guard ”Expedition” for Yamaha Tenere 700. 632-5140

I saw that Rocky Mountain ATV carries some "generic" looking yet specific to Tenere (2022 though, so not sure if changes were made where they won't fit a 2023?) And quite reasonably priced and IN STOCK! Anyone have any of these that can comment yea/nay?

Shop for Body, like Tusk Crash Bars - Engine Guards at Rocky Mountain ATV/MC. We have the best prices on dirt bike, atv and motorcycle parts, apparel and accessories and offer excellent customer service.

Shop for Body, like SW-MOTECH Upper Crash Bars at Rocky Mountain ATV/MC. We have the best prices on dirt bike, atv and motorcycle parts, apparel and accessories and offer excellent customer service.

Shop for Luggage, like Tusk Pannier Racks at Rocky Mountain ATV/MC. We have the best prices on dirt bike, atv and motorcycle parts, apparel and accessories and offer excellent customer service.

What about suspension "springing"? Any improvements in this department? I weigh about 230 without helmet/boots on. Are "progressive" fork springs in order? Anything need to be done to rear shock before I leave dealer?  Hoping to take delivery in less than 8 hours TODAY. Tomorrow as backup.. Thanks for any help.

There are bikes available without ADM.  You need to call around.  I called dealers last Tuesday, I drove to Boise ID and picked up a brand new '23 for $11750 otd.  They dropped the price $300 (the additional freight by YAMAHA) for me.  Another dealer in ID quoted me $11350 otd but that bike was spoken for, and the sales rep didn't know there was a deposit on it or he would have sold it to me for that.

And I agree with you.  This totally sucks and I hope you get a T7 soon.

@Turbohawk Thanks for the links.  I had no idea RM carried SW Motechs.  Whelp, there goes another $600...

**EDIT I purchased the lowers from SW Directly.  $256 shipped.  The uppers were $300.

I'd like to see user pics of any of these SW pieces installed, since the ones on RMATV site are such low resolution it's hard to see the finer points.

I'm in Texas up on the Oklahoma border. It took me about half a dozen or more calls back in early November to locate my 22. It was just across the river still in the crate. They got it in about 2 days earlier. Got lucky I guess.

If you only needed the lower you also could have gone for the Heavy Duty Enduro crashbars.

These look great but last time I contacted them I think they weren’t shipping outside Europe (well at theist to the UK)

I've never tried to buy a bike at christmas time...now I see why this is a bad idea...they are swamped and can't seem to get enough "builder boys" (yes, all under 18 yo, all probably getting paid at really close to minimum wage) to prep all they've sold this week.  You have to question the business model where the youngest and least experienced kids in the entire dealership are DEPENDED upon to deliver ALL their "high-tech" machines...

Of course when I was 16 I was doing the same thing, although I was quite the wrench thanks to my Dad. I was service manager at the LARGEST "big four" dealership when I was OLD at 17...lmao.  Hated that position but did it because no one else could...EVEN when they finally found someone to take my spot so I could take college classes...

If only I could take what I know now and be 16 again...anyone got some magic doohickey that will transfer bodies? lol

Looking at the Yamaha Centerstand for this Tenere...it looks very unfactory-like and in the photos does not look like it belongs there... and am probably gonna pass on adding it to the bike...also why on earth do people think they need a quick shifter for this bike?  Trackdays??

You really don;t need the upper.
i crashed mine with the Heavy Duty Enduro a couple of times and no damage to the fairing. I like the low weight and what weight it is is low.

I think almost all other crash bars (except Outback Motortech) look better than SW Motech... but won't argue about it 😁

Regarding the OEM centerstand: I would avoid it. First, it's not cheap, SW Motech and H&B are cheaper and their built quality is top notch.

Second, it's heavy (but so are the other ones as well EXCEPT AltRider's aluminum stand).

Third and most important, its lever sticks out very far. This might be convenient for operating it with your small toe, but some ppl here reported it to cause problems offroad.

I have a H&B one, which is quite compact. But I probably wouldn’t buy any centerstand any more.

Or Hepco-Becker, which mount at the same points that the frame down tubes do, helping avoid damage if you really bash your skid plate.

I "NEED" the upper.  It is more aesthetically pleasing to me and I have somewhere to mount lights and smaller side bags.

It arrived today from RMATVMC.

I'm now a proud owner of a 2023 Tenere 700 in Grey. The "sale" process was typical (which means good) but there were 4 "salesmen" involved in this sale which made it a tad frustrating at the beginning. They are all hourly, not commission. Surprising but evidently common business practice now.

Due to age and really space constraints in my garage AND barn, I reluctantly traded in my beloved 2009 Kawasaki Concours that had unfailingly served me (never a breakdown of anykind in our 52000 miles and 13 years together in some CRAZY rides), had never been dropped, ran like it was almost new. But, the moment I parked it at their facility the right fork seal decided to leak...what are the odds?  So of course the initial "trade in" estimated was downwardly adjusted, understandable, but haggling is something I've always been good at and overall I was able to get "this and that" to compensate for the bottom line. Ultimately a good transaction is one where everyone is satisfied and this goal was attained.

A few things I was surprised at: For some reason I was under the impression that ALL the Tenere's for 2023 (not just the RAID) were to have the TFT display, bluetooth connectivity, and the 3 ABS modes. Nope. If you can't live without these things you'll have to get a RAID (or maybe a 2024?). Good thing I didn't care that much about these things, more interested in the superb mechanicals.  So I didn't see ANY real changes for the base Tenere from 2022 other than color. One of the employees there has a 21 Tenere and he kindly went over everything with me, he did say "hmm, mine doesn't have this" a couple of times but he was touching various frame bracket pieces.

Next, The suspension was set-up a tad "harsh", the first few bumps in the road almost "hurt"...I'm not sure if the setup guy did this or if it was factory set? I'm going to have to soften compression dampening for sure...or does this mean I'm at the "harsh" part of the suspension action? I'm 5' 11" 235 pounds ready to ride, 34" inseam and I was surprised that I was literally only able to touch ONE foot down or just the tips of the toes for both feet down...so I don't think this suspension squatted much at all.  34.4" seat height, I know the seat is a tad wider than my DRz400s but DR is 36" seat height...and I felt like I was riding a TALLER bike on this Tenere...

Lights were better than I expected. Low beams were bright and sharp and high beam...WoW! No darkness.  Clutch pull was great and I upshifted from 3rd gear up clutchless 90% of the time, who needs to pay more for quickshift? Not I.

I was impressed with the wind protection from the "lady fingernail" windshield. The highest temp of the day was 48F. I initially rode there at a very brisk pace on the one toll road that allows (well, tolerates) jaunts of 100mph + as long as you are not in the urban zone (not officially, just what I've learned over the years). The concours has superb wind protection with the adjustable wind screen and all as well. When I left the dealership at 4:24pm the ambient temp had dropped to 45F. FYI I'm against the idea of toll roads. But this one does allow someone to bypass the usually HORRID Austin traffic...so pay for the time and convenience...reluctantly so. I may use it literally once a year.

I did not want to ride the toll road back so I could vary rpm's and all, so the normal 90 minute route was extended to just shy of 4 hour ride taking the backroads and frankly, got a bit lost...lol...took a wrong turn somewhere...no gps yet and my phone was useless due to not being able to hear or see the screen as it was just too big for the tankbag cell phone spot...By the time I got home it was 36F. Needless to say I was a popsicle...

I think this bike and me are going to get along fabulously...we were both happy to pull into the garage.  This tank bag I had wisely taken with me is too large for this bike but I needed every single square inch of space to bring everything back that I pilfered from the days negotiations.

Cheers and kick stands up!

I'm glad and happy you found and got your T7.  CONGRATS!!

As I mentioned in other posts, the US models didn't get the new stuff for 2023.

Question; how many keys did you get?
