Going with 48mm forks

Recommended Posts

I am going to swap the OE 43mm forks  with 48's ( My DH bike uses a 40mm fork ).   My KTM 690smc-r uses the WP 48mm and I can tell its way stiffer under heavy breaking and they look so much better.

Gonna make some phone calls and research and see what brands will be easy to do this mods, Showa,KYB or WP's.

I'll update this thread with the project progress as it evolves.

 Cheers

I have the same plan but dont want to drop to a single disc, I need to find a solution to put a RH fork lower on a LH fork leg.

Also, I dont want the hassle of modifying everything to fit a new triple clamp, I am toying with the idea of just having the OEM T7 fork clamps machined out a couple of mm to suit.

Thoughts?

Why? Either replace the whole triple clamp and headstock setup or just modify the existing one. We used to do it all the time for our race bikes 'on a budget'... as did half of the grid!

The fork leg issue is a problem though as I really dont want a single disc (though I hear they work fine with a YZ250 master cylinder).

This lacks intelligence

Look at the Boano KYB 48 kit. They do exactly that. It has 2 left legs to be able to have the original T7 dual 282 mm disks. Otherwise you'd have to machine 2 bespoke fork lugs. which is a Lot more money.

But I'd agree that the OEM T7 triples are not suitable to fit 48 mm forks. The are way too small. An extra 5 mm of diameter with small clamps (I'm also talking about height, not just diameter) would be dangerous. @Poacher I'd advise going in with calipers with the with of the 48 mm forks and you'll see how little would be left 😅
