Stripped sprocket carrier

vagrant318

Question

So I was changing chain and sprockets and while torquing the rear sprocket stripped 2 of the studs on what yamaha calls the clutch hub. Reading about it sounds like it's a thing with the fz09 and fz/mt07 as well. I'm going to try and get it fixed through my extended warranty but otherwise will have to fiX or take to the shop.  One bolt is still stuck on and just spinning.. whats my best option for removing this and the other damaged stud besides taking to the shop?

If that works for you then nothing. I did that for quite a while but have experienced issues from spark plugs backing out or other issues.  I'm also a scientist and when I have access to owners manual and a torque wrench I'll do something by the book. Obviously that doesn't always work out right anyway lol

Unless the owner manual is incorrect…then you run into trouble

Never had a spark plug ‘back out’ in 45 years of riding bikes

Agreed, sometimes specified torque values feel wrong and could be in some cases. I do like to cross reference online as well though.

I've had it happen once with a chimney plug in my dual plugged sportster. I have a hunch it preceded a motor rebuild after a piston broke the following year.

Wondering if anyone has a suggested torque value for these studs?  Any tips and tricks?  (aside from "feel" as some are not adept as others)  Thanks.

Use a smaller 3/8"torque wrench in inch lbs and start around 35 ft lbs working towards specified torque in 5lb increments.  I left mine around 50 and painted marks on my bolts. Nothing ever loosened. They would likely be fine with far less though. A guy I talked to from sprocket center said aluminum race nuts only torque to 30 ft lbs
