Chain slap

Right so I've heard about chain slap and I've googled around but nobody seems to be asking the exact question so...do y'all get a big slap from dropping off a kerb or just some small potholes at speed?

I'm thinking it's just the way it is but it does seem a little over the top

Chain tension is fine

Dunno it's quite a big obnoxious chattery slap.

I don't want the chain any tighter

I feel like I get a lot also, and similarly don't want to tighten it too much. 16k miles and no issues, chain is in decent shape for its life.

The slap noise goes mostly away with a chain guide.  I used the factory Yamaha part.

Aha, so had a 60 mile or so ride (on road) with a good bit of weight on the back.

Was on road as I say but slap seemed to be worse.

I'm 100kg (220lb) without gear so it stands to reason that a heavier rear spring would help right?

definitely, chain tension spec from Yam is a bit too tight, even the upper limit of their normal. I run 46-48mm on my WR and been happy with it on and off road (with chain guide). Yes you hear it a bit, but then again better a bit looser than tight.

Aye chain spec is as tight as I want it and is at  least as tight as I've ever run a chain

  • 1 month later...

Finally got round  to fitting a heavier spring.

Went for a 95nm k-tech from rugged roads uk. (Great service)

Cos I'm a big lad with a heavy right hand and sometimes carry a bit of cargo

Ragged it Round the farm into town and up a rocky lane....zero chain slap 😁

Plus everything just feels nicer more poised and harder edged, like it!

Good to hear

I weight the same as you,I was interested in learning what spring rate would be best.

I haven't even set the sag yet tbh but it felt something like right.

Looking around 90nm might have done me but I do load it up at times so went higher.

It has raised the bike a little, dunno if it will settle down any but worth noting if that's a deal breaker

Chain slap is ANNOYING on the T7.  Had it Tight, adjusted it to Yamaha spec and I have a chain guide.  It feels like something is just loose.  What's the fix?

I just got the bike back from repair at the yamaha dealers.the chain is so tight it's talking when I push the bike.

Gonna slacken that off before I ride it.

The bike is just a little bit high for me but I have gotten used to it.

Man see so many people complain about chain slap. Haven’t heard the chain yet, I’m too focused on the dirt!

Good for you!  However, it was hard to not focus on it when I was on the dirt for over one thousand miles.  It's annoying.  I felt like something was loose or broken...

I found that I got a lot of chain slap when the rear suspension bottomed out.  Now that I have a much better rear shock, I rarely hear it.

Couldn't say buddy. What do you weigh?

Maybe there's a discrepancy in spring rates?

Honestly mine sounded like it was jumping the sprocket on even slightly rough bits of road at speed

do you have a chain guard?

Yep chain guard fitted. I'm leaning towards a variance in factory spring  rates
