Rough gear shifting. Clutch plates or??

Oxxa

Question

Hello guys,

My bike now has 36,000 km and its been offroad a lot.

The gears are not changing well, my mechanic said the its clutch plates and that stuff, but I dont notice any high gear clutch slipping…

My problem is that when i want to change gears, it feels like im only pulling the clutch lever halfway when in reality im pulling it 100%.

Basically it feels like changing gears without touching the clutch lever

also, if i put the bike on 1st gear with the clutch lever pulled, it has gotten harder to walk the bike in reverse.

Not sure how to explain it better, i can try if you dont get something

thank you

Sounds like clutch is not disengaging all the way. Does your cable have a lot of free play?

The cable does not have a lot of free play. That part is fine.

What else could be broken/worn that the clutch is not disengaging all the way?

Probably worth pulling the clutch apart and inspect the clutch plates for warping.

Also check the clutch basket for notches.

Might be time for a new clutch assembly if you’ve done a lot of off road with heavy clutch use.

Mine is basically the same. Hard to push unless I just switched it off and clunky gear changes, especially in low rpm and when cold.

Clutch seems to disengage normally though, if it's on operating temp the rear wheel won't move on the center stand with clutch pulled in.

I want to look into it this winter. Just not sure if I will do it myself or go to a mechanic.

A number of people have found dry clutch plates on inspection. Soaking then in oil overnight before reassembly solved it.

@Hollybrook,  hey again.  It seems I’m following the same journey as you on the T7.  Did you have issues with rough, clunky downshifting?  Is this how you resolved it?

@bookwormhands no, my bike shifts well so far.. I've just seen enough reports to know that it is a real issue.

One reason I may not have had any issues is that I downshift as I slow down. Some of the complaints I have seen appear to try to downshift after stopping.

@Hollybrook, I downshift and rev match as I slow down…and it’s rough, clunky downshifting.  I have 800 miles on it and put synthetic in at 600 miles.

I'm still running dino oil at 4K miles, and shifts are very smooth up and down with a blip on downshift.

I'll soon be switching to full synthetic to help with 5,000 mile change intervals on a long trip. I'm hoping that will not affect the shifting.

@Oxxa I have recently installed a TRW clutch plate kit with EBC springs. I noticed a real improvement, no squeals, no clunks and a better more progressive feel to the bite point. I'd recommend it instead of the Yamaha plates if you are thinking of changing it.

I had dry clutch plates on my ’23. I got them replaced and soaked under warranty. It was almost impossible to shift, and I really had to yank and push and slam the hell out of the gear shifter to move it. I was afraid I was going snap something. The dealership thought I was trippin’ until they got it and realized I wasn’t just a moron or BS’ing them. It took a month and a half for the backordered plates to arrive.

@Just Footerin, could you please post a link to the clutch plate kit you ordered?  Thanks!

@bookwormhands

the parts I ordered are pictured below. I had seen the YouTube guys at Nomad Sweden installing this. Taking to Robert he was very pleased with it. I can confirm it was a definite improvement, giving a  more progressive feel like you can feather the clutch. The springs are heavier and about 2mm longer. I thought they might leave the lever hard to pull but I don't feel much difference. However I still might fit a clutch extension arm at some point. I think if I did that the clutch would be as sweet as anything.
