Rear Rack Bolt Spacing

Craig Sturman

Recommended Posts

I am looking at building my own rear rack to suit my specific need.   I am in need of the bolt spacing for the rear rack.  (picture attached).  Since my bike isn't here yet, I was hoping one of you could measure it (center to center) for me.  I will also need the bolt size.  Thanks in advance.

The bolts are 8mm, the bolt centre’s 252mm, also the two tank side  bolts are about 230 apart and the back are about 200. I have tried a few ways to make a rack, not easy, tried mounting of the bolts and coming out underneath top piece of plastic.(in between plastics)

I haven’t see a rack I like yet, the Yamaha one looks like the pipe spider has crawled all over the back of the bike and small ones that cover the back seat, how do you remove the seat and get to your tools?

Still trying.

Thanks Krusty.  If I figure something out, I'll let you know.

This is first in my life home made rack. I made it last year in September using very simple tools. For my needs it's ok, no problem to remove the seat.

The rack looks good nice and simple, I should have one done in a week or two, need something a little bigger, I am looking at fitting a Dry rider gear bag, I will post pictures when I finish it, Black is the best colour.

I have just fitted the rack, bit tight on the seat, simple rack, I can’t take the bike into work, so I’ve had make it from measurements, the next prototype will be better

Suggestion for next one: would be widen it and especially space the rails further apart so that you can get your hand in between the rail and the side panel as that be nice hand grab rail when moving the bike around. And be easier to use for tie down straps etc.

Your rack seems very nice. I'm also planning to make my own rack with a rack plate for tailbag. Can you please tell me the diameter and thickness of the pipe you used and how did you bend it?

The diameter of the pipe is 17mm and the thickness is 2mm. For half a price of the heavy  Yamaha rack I bought  hydraulic compressor to bend the pipe. Now, I can use it to build small skate park for my son🙂

I have made a couple of racks since that one, the second rack was a bit long, the third one is spot on to what I was after, I used 20mm OD tube, 2mm wall, just used a hand bender with a long pipe as a handle.

I can still take the rear seat half off and it is as low as it can be.

Here are a few pictures.
