Ca only model?

Question

Can anyone confirm with a unique VIN that Yamaha builds a California only model T700?  I'm getting OTD quotes from a number of CA dealers around $12,500 to $13K.  Seeing others here posting OTD prices at $11K and below has me wanting to search elsewhere than this Commie controlled state.   The main issue is bringing in a new out of state bike with less than 7500 miles gets really messy, really quick when dealing with the DMV. If Yamaha builds only a 50 state model, it might be worth pursuing an out of state purchase.  Any Californian done this with a T700?

The T700 is a 50 state bike but for some reason, Yamaha makes a distinction between CAlifornia bikes and the rest.  I don't know why, in the end it doesn't really matter.  For finding parts, there is nothing different between the two.

The original issue was if the "CA" stood for Canada or California.  CA does not stand for Canada as far as the Tenere 700 is concerned.

Good news. So, accordingly,  if the bike has a 50 state compliance emissions sticker, then the bike can be registered in CA, regardless of the model #, right?

That sounds right.  But there are issues related to mileage on used bikes being brought in. So that would likely be the only issue with T700's brought into CA.

As I understand the regulations on the CA DMV page, the 7,500 mile rule pertains to 49 state emissions vehicles.  In my past experience in registering a 49 state bike in CA, if you try to register one with less than 7,500 miles, the VIN will be flagged and it won't allowed to be titled in CA.  If it is a 50 state emissions bike, then fairly certain the 7,500 mile rule doesn't apply.  In the past CA tried to restrict new vehicles brought in from out of state ( for sales tax revenue purposes), but apparently lawsuits stopped that practice.   Currently they charge the difference in sales tax between the state where you bought it and the California tax rate, for a new vehicle up to a year old.  Pretty convoluted, eh?

Nope, definitive answer ( as best as I can tell) is the US bikes are 50 state emissions compliant.  Just registered my son's new 2022 T7 with 200 miles on the clock, in California.  It had been registered in AZ for a few weeks and the CA DMV has redeemed itself ( somewhat) in my eyes. I'd rather get a root canal without benefit of Novacaine than go to the DMV, but this process took all of an hour including the nice clerk lady braving 103° heat to go outside to verify the VIN, engine # and emissions sticker.  Very smooth process, glad it's done!

Hey all, California resident here and looking to purchase an out of state Tenere 700.

After reading this entire thread and being super paranoid about buying an out of state bike that is potentially not registerable in California, I just want to add that the 2021 Tenere model year has CA and non-CA models while the 2022+ models appear 50 state legal. This is adding to the confusion.

This is backed up by 1) Experience stated in this thread, 2) Part listings on Partzilla.com, and 3) My experience when purchasing an out of state Yamaha XSR700 (same CP2 engine)

I attached screenshots from Partzilla where you can see the 2021 year has x2 SKUs per colorway. Other years only have x1 SKU per colorway.

I purchased an out of state 2018 XSR700 (same CP2 engine) and just got lucky finding a CA model outside of CA. Originally the dealership told me they couldn't make the sale due to CARB regulation, but checked the VIN and found it was actually a California bike.

When I checked Partzilla for the XSR700, there are x2+ SKUs for 2018, but only 1 SKU for 2022+. This further backs up that they made the CP2 engine 50 state legal starting 2022+.

If/When I purchase a Tenere 700 out of state and bring it to California, I'll post with my experience.

You don't need a unique VIN to confirm they built CA compliant bikes.  They have separate model designations for CA and Non-CA bikes.

Sounds like those dealers are trying to screw you...not the State.  Prices are all over the place due to dealer "fees".  Some have en some don't.  My dealer stated MSRP+ freight+tax title etc.  I'll have to see how that all works out but should be well under 12k.

You're looking at 2021 models. This is old information and no longer applies.

@AZJW, Euro 5 bikes meet CARB standards. Since Yahama adopted EURO 5, there hasn't been a CA-only model.

IDK why people are thinking these bikes come in "well under 12k" for the 24s. The MSPR is 10,799. I'm in Wisconsin and still paid just over 12k with tax, title and license, so 12,5k sounds right. I think what people are missing is that the prices have increased each year; for example, a non-CA 21' held an MSRP of 9,999, while today it's 800 more. This means the bike has actually gone down in price (9,999 in 21 is the same as 11665 in 24).

I purchased my 2024 for exactly 11K OTD on 1 March 2024 in SoCal.

Then that dealer lost money on the sale. If this was bought in Bakersfield tax for 2024 would be 8.25% and titling would be 264. That makes the bike 9850$ before tax, title & licensing.

And that is without dealer fees.

So either your dealer is planning on making money up on service & farkles or they're not long for this world.

In '21 I picked mine under MSRP and without Freight, Setup, Document Fees.... $10,400 (That includes tax, title, & registration).

Dealer is still around, and thriving.
