rear wheel refitting

i dont know whether its me but i find refitting the rear wheel a pain in the ass. i sorted the spacers by machining new ones from stainless with a little extra on the od so they dont fall out now. the other pisser is the brake caliper sliding carrier. it will not stay attached to the swinging arm when offering the wheel up. i sorted this with a cable tie around the carrier/swingarm. it holds everything in position for much easier wheel fitting.

Same for lots of other bikes I’ve had, its a pain and with a little more thought (or resources) a better design allowing for quick easy removal would be possible. I use a zip tie too to hold the Caliper.

On the subject of awkward brake calipers, when refitting mine the other day after a puncture the anti rattle clip for the brake pads got damaged and is now useless, Yamaha are saying they don't sell a replacement clip! and the only solution is to buy a new caliper which is £225. plus fitting...!  Which for a so called go anywhere easy maintenance bike seems a bit crazy. Any suggestions? Do you actually need the anti rattle clip for the brakes to work?

While you don't 'need' it, the pads will vibrate a bit and cause location pin wear over time. If you keep an eye on it when lubing the chain and carefully inspect everything when changing tire, you'll be fine. Pads will rattle a bit, but that's just noise.

Many thanks for the advice, my dealer says its a problem with both Yamaha and KTM from time to time> They  both buy a job lot of calipers, master cylinders etc but don't buy spare parts kits expecting you to buy the whole unit! Anyway thanks again!

makes refitting the wheel easier with brake piston pushed in a little so the brake disc will slide in easier
