DIY Tail Tidy

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

New member here. Just got my T7 a month ago and thought I would share the few mods I have done to my bike.

I got this idea after seeing Mr.motarded build a tail tidy for his bike out of a rubbermaid container. I was planning on buying a R&G tail tidy but they are sold out and I didn't feel like waiting.

The only downsides to this tail tidy are there is no license plate light, although I'm sure you could ad one if you wanted, and the plate is not completely horizontal but well on it's way so we will see if the police have an issue with this.

I used 12'oclock labs led turn signals. I had some L brackets left over from their tail tidy kit for another bike that I used to mount the turn signals.

Rather than going and buying a rubbermaid bin like Mr.motarded used, I had some mud flaps that I never got around to installing on my truck so I cut them to fit. It bolts to the plastic part of the bike and then the license plate bolts to the mudflap.

If you have questions ask away.

I really don't get why people spend a 100$ to get a tail tidy and not doing the mod @diesel and @BMRT7 did. I'll do the same. Quick, easy and minimal.

In the Netherlands this mod would be illegal due to the angle of the licence plate...

There is also no number plate light.

That would not be a problem here.
The T7 is only my second bike where i left one on after changing the rear.
Only time i got a ticket for not be able to read the plate you couldn't read it with a stadium light post and the only reason i got that ticket was because the officer thought i was honest and friendly enough to forgive me the other 2 more expensive tickets he could have given me :classic_blush:

I did the same but drilled signals into the tail piece.

Just a question for those who used the solution of @BMRT7 . Did you mount the metal plate above, or did you saved that weight and left it off. I suspect I can do without, but has anybody experience with that?

I left the metal part away. The plastic part you hold in your hand, i re-bent it with a heatgun.

In Spain this mod would be illegal as well. If you replace or mod some parts you need a homologation.

Anyone ever successfully separated the red lens to get to the led inside the tail light?  I’m trying to add 3/4 led marker lights as left and right signals hidden inside.

I am fixing to do a similar modification,  but possibly using a black 1/4” cutting board as a backer and possibly those 3/4 amber round studded led’s804F128F-2D6A-4A66-9A7E-FFF2CB08F062.png.3fe6594f895a8ec813e22775d968665b.png as flashers that double at license plate hardware.

I presume they are ok not having the number plate illuminated- that would be illegal here in the uk

Checked out all of the Tail Tidy's out there and wasn't convinced it need be some complex, so went out and cranked out my own in short order.  Ended up using a small piece of aluminum sheet (white in last picture) with one bend and holes for mounting, the license plate light and the existing license plate holder.  Ended up keeping the forward plastic piece, cutting a piece of the bottom to give it a finished look.  I haven't installed any signals just yet, but they can be mounted on the license plate holder bracket or in the plastic piece like others did.  I suppose the only down side is keeping the existing sheet metal support, license plate light and additional plastic doesn't eliminate as much weight as replacing it with an aluminum bracket.  I'm pleased with the results as I only used a piece of scrap aluminum laying around and think it's a better solution than what others are selling for good money.

Added turn signals, made a new bracket out of thicker aluminum and took a few more pics for better details on my DIY Tail Tidy.  Fairly pleased with the results, especially at the price
