Puncture Repair Kits

I carry two tubes but also have an old tube patch kit stuffed in my compressor bag.  I looked at it the other day and it must be 15 years old - so I am guessing not much use.

Anyone have recent experience with patch kits that worked?

As an aside, as a youngster I recall patches that were bonded to a metal "cup" and you applied them with a small clamp and then lit the back of the cup where there was some type of slow burn solid fuel and it heated up the patch and bonded it that way.  I am not advocating that, but I know those suckers worked.
