Brake Caliper Bolt Torque

Dibles

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Just a quick one to just raise awareness to possible problem. I have a 2019 which has covered 50k. Front wheel has been out a fair bit tyres servicing etc; but not excessively. Always used Yamaha recommended torque settings. Front brake bolt at the recommended torque has stripped the caliper carrier threads 😬.

If it didn't strip the first few times, I would look elsewhere.  Did you use a 1/2" torque wrench?

Would a 1/2" torque wrench be a good thing or bad?

@Tseven

using a 1/2" torque wrench isn't necessary a good or bad thing, because torque is just torque...(F x D = T)

It is just that a torque wrench tends to be more accurate when the desired torque value is somewhere in the middle of the torque range of the torque wrench.

As for caliper brake bolts is 30 ft-lb, that value tends to be in the middle of most 3/8" torque wrench and toward the lower end of most 1/2" torque wrench.

Therefore, by using a 1/2" torque wrench, you are allowing yourself in a larger error zone, while 3/8" will provide a better more precise value.

Hope that makes sense.

Learned something new today. Thanks!
