Chain Guide

Herman

Recommended Posts

I just bought my bike mid January and have it in the shed as there is 6 inches of snow on the ground here in southern Ct. I have been looking at a lot of videos about the importance of a chain guide on these bikes. I bought this bike mainly for on road riding but also want the flexibility of it being capable of light off road travel if the need should arise. My question is do I need a chain guide when over 95% of my riding will be on the streets? I should mention that this is my fifth motorcycle since the age of seventeen (now 65)  and used to race dirt bikes at a much younger age so I am no stranger to off road riding just much older now and not in the same shape as I was from 14  years to about 18-19 years old. It's not the expense that concerns me as they are around $70. It's the noise that they make that I have been reading about from more than one source. Any help would be appreciated,

@Herman Welcome to the forum from AZ and congrats on the new T7. Regarding the chain guide, I wouldn't bother with one for the street and unless you're riding in rocks or where a stick might derail your chain, it's not necessary.

Thanks but I can't take credit for it. I got the idea off you tube.🙂

Hi Herman, for your type of riding a chain guide would be overkill (unless your 5% offroad riding age really hardcore stuff).

Jumps (due to chain slap), logs/sticks and rocks more or less require chsin guides.

But: They aren't noisy imho. My Acerbis chain guide doesn't cause any disturbing/annoying noise, only a very slight increase in chain noise.

Thanx for the responses, I just saved myself a couple bucks. Also from what I have learned here perhaps the people that I read about having excessive noise problems coming from their chain guide may not have their chains properly adjusted.  It now makes sense that a loose chain could be the problem causing the extra noise. Thanx Tenerider. 🙂
