Air box lid warping using foam filter

Hi riders in Australia just putting this out there to keep an eye on your airbox lids . A fair few have noticed stock lids are bending when you tighten the screws down on supplied foam filters , this is causing lids to warp and not give you a positive seal and could possible dust the clean side of the filter and engine, just wondering how many have seen this , and what is the solution , have seen a billet replacement for the lid ,

Stock foam filter that Yamaha made available in Aus? So, it's too tall?  IF that's the case, a shorter foam filter would be the answer. Right?

Use high temperature grease smeared on the lid contact/sealing area.

Uni filter supplied filters they are slightly raised but need to be to get positive pressure down but the weakness seems to be in the plastic lid at the thin point where snorkel is widest

Here are pics of the MWR filter.  They also make a cover for it. One of our vendors is having a group buy on these. The filter is very good, comes pre oiled and works with the stock snorkel. It's also a lil larger than the uni fllter, more filter material/more filtration.

If you also order the cover, it deletes the snorkel and allows more airflow with a larger opening.

I wonder if these would work better? On the Uni filters, are you removing the snorkel of keeping it on? On our Mt07 forum (same engine and airbox) many people have removed their snorkels and gone with these MWR filters and covers and there have been zero issues. But thats not in the dirt. One of these filters and keeping the snorkel is best bet in dirt. MAybe even prefilter.

I bet none of the the MT07 are going offroad! The offroad dust in Australia is very fine, I run a pre filter on the snorkel, when hitting the trail. To me MWR Filter looks like a great performance on road option only, especially in Australia.

Same foam as a dirtbike filter, oiled and all. And, none of my dirtbikes have snorkels.

It's a personal thing, on a Long trip easy to switch inexpensive pre filters, they take up less room. I prefer the additional protection. No problems if you are riding a dirt bike for the day. I'm sure the foam filter works well, I just wouldn't ride a long trip with our fine dust without snorkel with pre filter. The cost to ship say 4 MWR filters even with  special price isn't the best option for me.

I hear ya, thanks for the extra thoughts on that!  We don't have any of the uni foam filters here in the usa stores, and we don't have any of the prefilters in our stores yet, either. Which sucks.

So, im gonna go with the MWR filter without their cover, in the group buy, and then still use the stock snorkel. I may fab my own cover for the snorkel to avoid the stock cover bending like described above.

I will cut up a piece of one of my old dirtbike foam filters and oil it up and use it as a home made pre filter.

Best of both worlds!

I was just trying to state "horses for courses " the Uni filter is cheaper option  than the MWR over here. Running a pre filter offroad just makes sense, especially with bulldust. If on road performance is the main focus, I'd be going for the MWR option. 👍

Can you share a link. A dusted motor would be sub optimal ownership experience... If these work with the uni filter and are not stupidly expensive then happy days.

That looks like overkill to me.  I would just put some foam strips on the bottom of the cover flange to fill any gaps from bending.

Plus, that uni filter material looks kinda small and wimpy. And the flange looks thinner than the MWR, which also has more filter material.

Im gonna try the larger MWR filter, before buying a metal lid.   @pgeldz has been racing these MWR filters for years on his race Mt-07. Have you ever ran the MWR with stock cover and snorkel? Any bending or airgaps ??

I personally haven't, but I know many ho have, and no issues.  You can see from the photo above, that the MWR filter has filter material under the sealing flange, so in already has the extra foam to take up any space caused by the flexible OEM flange.

The MWR Air box cover is ridged, so it doesn't warp when installed.

As far as dusty conditions, I race in a pretty dusty environment, and never had issues at all.

The unifilter foam filter is a retro fit in Uk, it does mention in the instructions that you may have to trim the snorkel slightly.

I've had this on my EBay watch list for a while now. I've finally purchased one. I was going to make something to help seat and seal ,but I decided that it was going to be a half assed solution. The lid just isn't up to it!

Good choice. The MWR filter works well with the stock cover and snorkel. That red piece on top is thin alloy and helps to keep it sealed even if the lid is bent. This is a trouble free filter.

The sealing issue with the Unifilter is that the rim of the filter is a dense rubber and when you try to screw the relatively flexible plastic OEM lid down on top of it, the plastic will bend down in the corners and make the rubber bend upwards in the middle, letting air get under the rubber and bypass the filter.

The new Aluminium Airbox cover turned up today! It's very well made, I have piece of mind now, dust bypass prevention👍. No need for a piece of wire, tape or chewing gum to fix an under performing standard lid! I'm going to run a pre filter offroad, for compactness and quick and easy service in the Australian outback. The Bulldust has to be experienced to appreciate☠.

Note, pre filter fits under the seat, ready for adventure. 😁

Hello, depending on the filter the warping of the intake may not matter. For example with my Guglatech filter, the filter element is rigid and works as a bracket (the black one someone mannufactured) which seals the airbox very nicely.

Seems this unifilters needs the bracket to hold it down and seal.

Also the bolts have 1.3nm torque so I suppose most people will overtighten the bolts which will warp the lid.

I do like the aluminium replacement for the snorkel, looks cool!

Yes, I believe that the Unifilter needed a more solid lid to unsure a good seal!! The lid is poorly designed, too lightweight. I don't know many people who take a torque wrench into a desert on a motorcycle. I have a mechanical background so I'm not heavy handed. I removed the lid a number of weeks ago and it was already warped, I knew it was a potential problem. By the looks of your video if you had dust bypass it would have been a while till you noticed it. Not a chance I want to take.

Both the Guglatech and MWR filters look like excellent  products!  Probably less likely to encounter sealing issues. At a later time, I may  get one or the other. I'm personally happy to have piece of mind now, with the removal of a weak link in the chain.
