T7 Weight reduction Facts

Hi all,

 

I have just watched a video from Moto Geo: Ride, Strip and Rip! / Yamaha Ténéré 700 / T7 / Roland Sands Design / @MotoGeo Adventures - YouTube

 

They strip 30 lbs down from the original bike... Now we all know we are not going to ride like he did and have a T7 that has no fairings but what is achievable ?

 

Back exhaust 4kg 

Headers 3.5kg 

Battery 2.0kg 

Tail tidy 1.0kg 

Passenger foot pegs 1kg 

 

I will base these numbers mostly on my bike which does not have crash bars, centre stand so I am confident that it will meet the 205kg full wet weight.

 

11.5kg from stock = 205- 11.5kg =193.5kg ( this is presuming your bike was without crash bars and centre stand ) 

 

I am in the middle of changing the front dual setup to a single disc setup

 

Stock Brembo without pads : 0.75kg x2 = 1.5kg 

Pads :  0.15kg = 0.3kg 

Discs : 1.4kg x 2 = 2.8 kg 

Braided lines estimate : 1.5kg 

 

Total : 6.1kg 

 

Beringer 6 piston with Pads : 1.05 kg 

Disc R1 320mm : 1.5kg 

Braided line  estimate : 1.0kg 

 

Total: 3.55 kg 

 

Difference : 2.55 kg 

 

For people who will use a 4 pot calliper and a single disc conversion the reduction will be greater but it needs to be verified.

 

Presuming the above is correct the bike should now have : 190.95kg 

 

ABS delete plus braided line direct for back and front estimate : 3kg ( please correct me if I have under or overestimated this )

 

Bike weight with all the above : 184.95 kg full wet 

 

I would like to add more items to the above list or correct the above if it is wrong and have this as weight saving thread. Once I have finished my conversion I will get the bike on the scales to see how it copes.

 

Please feel free to reply with suggestions on weight reduction or actual measurements.

I think it's great @Aleksandar13 Bikes are to be personalised and made better if you ask me. Go for it and looking forward to the finished 180kg 😝fully wet target

Going to full Ti system no cat, I only saw about a 10lb reduction, not 16... for what its worth

Race teams make their bikes as lite as possible for a reason, and it's not normally speed, its because the bike requires less effort to ride and asists with handling.  Even though most of us are not racing, enjoying a bike that is easier to maneuver is a great thing. Awesome work guys, I will continue to follow along while I save my pennies for the T7 diet.

 Think I'll start with the battery, since it's the quickest (cheapest) fix and removes weight from the top of the bike.

Well, my bike is now just on 200 (440lbs) using my bath scales, and already I am very happy with it. A few more kilos off would be good to get even better handling in soft sand or tricky terrain, and still planning a few more things to do. It is an easy bike to take weight off. Just the standard mods like slip-on (-2.5kgs), battery(-2), pillion pegs(-1) and tail tidy(-0.5) will get you under 200.

If you go more exotic you can get another 5kgs with full titanium exhaust (-5.1 in total), tubeless wheels (-2?), after market rotors (-0.6) and titanium pegs (-0.3). And likely another 2-3kgs with single brake caliper/rotor and braided lines (-2.5?) which I haven't done yet, and some small improvements like indicators, rally seat and radiator guard.

But then the inevitable happens and you start looking at protection. I have kept mine to a minimum for a bike that will spend most of its time off road, with Adventure Spec bash plate (+1.5), GB Racing engine guards (+0.75) and bark busters (+1?).

I haven't weighed them but would have added a little weight in the front springs. The rear Ohlins shock with heavier spring and remote preload was exactly the same weight as the OEM shock (can't find the weight now). I have also added some items like Double Take mirrors(+0.85), extra lighting (+0.4), heated grips(+0.4?) and B&B rear rack with grab handles (1.3).

 

Here are some weights for various parts that you might find helpful (all in kgs, x 2.2 to get lbs).

  • OEM bash plate 0.74
  • Adv Spec bashplate 2.25
  • 245mm rear rotor 0.94
  • eBay 245mm rear rotor 0.82
  • Motomaster 245mm rear rotor 0.71
  • Full OEM exhaust 8.2
  • SC Projects Titanium full exhaust 3.1
  • OEM battery 3.1
  • 290 CCA LiPo battery 1.1
  • Pillion pegs 1.1
  • OEM 282mm front rotor 1.22 
  • eBay 298mm front rotor 1.06
  • Motomaster 282mm front rotor 1.01
  • Doubletake mirrors 0.85 (extensions 0.43,mirrors 0.42)
  • Yamaha Rally seat 2.2
  • Seat Concepts front high seat 1.7
  • My modified seat rear section 1.0 (I didn't weigh the OEM rear section)
  • B&B rear rack 1.1 (+ a bit more for grab handles) 

Then you could look at tire choice as some tires are lighter than others. I am using heavy high profile Motoz Desert HT 140/80x18 and Shinko MX216 90/100x21 for ride comfort, performance and mileage, but could save a couple of kilos using different tires. I believe the TKC80s are quite light.

Thank you for sharing this with us... Would it be best add all of these items in a spreadsheet and share them at some point..? I will try and make one and share in the first post.. Once I have my front brake removed and changed to a single disc I will weigh everything and post here but will also like to weigh the bike.

Yeah keeping a record of the weights would be good, Although I am not sure if this site hosts files. Maybe just a list of everything in the first posts.

 

Also I have corrected a couple of items in my list. I'll keep adding to my existing post as I get to new items.

So today, I've changed to bar end mirrors and got rid of the acerbis handguards... Used my wife's kitchen scale... Stock mirrors are heavy.. 👍🏼 

800 grams saving if you exchange the mirrors and with guards the saving is even more... 1.1kg saved.

I remember talking to GP mucci, the guy who developed the custom Rally T7 for the Kaprioni team. 

 

He told me the stock front is very heavy. Lights and tower. They swapped them for CNC machined ones and after market leds and I think they saved around 5kg.

 

Not an easy mod but a lot of weight to be saved.

I don't believe in official declarations, many times they comes from marketing offices ( Yamaha is one of the more honest) and very often people in that office are too much optimistic. 
So, before to start working on a motorbike I take away all the gasoline and I weight the bike. I had a lot of surprise.

T7 and Ktm 790 are light bike.

I weight this beauty before to start working on at 198kgs. 

It's something like a record.

Indeed the old Xrv750 Africa Twin is 232kgs, same Ktm990 and Crf1000 stop the weight scale at 242 without DCT ( but with the central stand). 

 

The T7 in the photo is 176,5kgs and is really tough.

Many people believe that plastic is light. 

False!

However, as said above from Powder, the beautiful original front light and all the support ( Plastic reinforced with fiber glass) is HEAVY!

I weighted 4,3kg the light and more or less the same for the support. 
We would like to let the original because is a characterization of this beautiful motorbike, but we got fear to destroy the support in the long way from Montecarlo to Dakar.

So I rebuild the support welding a reinforce in the frame and I build an aluminum rack for little led lights and rally tools.

I think it is possible do a slim T7 near to 160 kgs .

 wow, this looks awesome! Many years ago, I saw a KTM990 with the fairing removed and a similar tank, also from Italy - was it yours?

Ciao Exiledinaus, it could be.

I did some aluminium bodyworks in the last years.
Some are here in this photos. An Africa Twin, a GS800, and some Ktm 990.

The 990 were 172kg in the heavier model.

More weight comes out of my T700Sm as I convert the intake to velocity stacks with Ram Air filter. 

Air box removed and 1.3kg less weight plus a bracket which to me doesn't do much. 

Gained 270grams with the new intake.

More weight has come of with the new brake setup... 3kg less than before and massive stopping power. 

Happy days... 👍🏼 

Airbox mod, new brakes and new mirrors = minus 5kg.

When I got my T7, I topped off the fuel tank, and weighed the bike 100% stock, full of fluids, reary to ride:
455 lbs (206kg)

 

I knew I wanted to add protection and accessories, but keep the weight as low as possible.

Mods that definitely reduced weight:
Removed passenger foot pegs
WPS Lithium Battery
LeoVince Headers, Huzar High exit exhaust (with exit db killer)
Removed air-box snorkel

 

Mods that added weight or were about neutral as they replaced similarly weighed oem parts:
Rear hugger
BlackDog skid plate
Camel ADV tail tidy
Neutron flush led turn signals & tst relay
Heated grips
Garmin GPS (& custom 3d printed mount)
RallyRaid rear shock spring

Pivot Pegz

Double-take Adventure mirrors

Googlatech air filter

Engine case covers

Seat concepts seat cover

Some big metal hand guards (can't remember the brand)
There may be a few mods I'm forgetting...

 

With the bike ready to ride, full of fluids, full fuel, gps installed, ready to ride, weighed on the exact same scales:
455 lbs (206kg) 

 

I was hoping to reduce the weight a bit, but I guess keeping it 100% oem is not bad either. 

 

Anything I do to the bike now will just add weight however. 
The bike will have 2 configurations, every day rider, and touring.  
In touring, I have a rear side rack and luggage the will go on, possibly a camel adv camel tank as well (for the long journeys)

Great to see what you guys are doing.

Hey Aleks  I would love to replicate what you have done, have you experienced any downside to your brake conversion, do you experience any more fade due to heat then the twin calipre setup.

I was wondering about trying to use a 6 pot brake calibre off an r1 as I see they can be purchased second hand quite cheaply whereas the Berringer looked quite expensive.

Do you have any photos of the brake set-up and were you able to buy the mounting bracket or did you have to buy it.

I pulled the all plastics, ABS, extra rotor, evap, stock can, tubes, and a ton of bolts/brackets. It really adds up!

Starting to come together. Still need to paint the radiator, and the crash bars, finish the fuel tank, finish the carbon fiber headlight support rods, tidy a bit of wiring....
