They can be tapped to the appropriate size.

That would have the ideal way for me to go about it, to reuse the OEM mount threads, but TBH I did not want to buy a tap just for this one-time use. Its almost M12 or something like that isn't it?

16mm tap, I bought one but ended up just using locking bar ends. Wasn't going in great..

Correct 16mm.

I agree, that it’s not really worth it. I used the regular Barkbuster bar end mounts with the Barkbuster bar end weights.

I added some 3M walkway safe tape to the frame as I noticed my boots were rubbing the paint thin. This will add grip too.

I fitted some new tyres.

Mitas E-09 rear with an E-13 front. Hopefully will be a little better off road than the stock Pirelli's.

Finally installed a Scotts Steering Stabilizer (much needed off-road). Already had the Acerbis tank so I knew I was going to have to mold the tank to fit the Scotts. Two wrenches, ratchet straps and a heat gun did the trick. If it works, it works!

Just bought it last week after a chance meeting of 2 amazing people who travel through Mexico on their T7's and happened to be at a Giant Loop event in Bend.

I’ll say my three favorite changes are The Fix brake pedal, the ProGrip 714 grips and the inexpensive Amazon Ride It levers.

Did a 150 mile ride last week and this week I’ve been practicing tiny figure 8’s.

Thanks for all of the great info on this site!!  What a nice resource!!

Cheers!

Next time do it with masking tape, mark the contours with a marker and then put the masking tape on the grip tape to cut out.

Nice, I like that idea. I may redo and try that again, it was tricky to get right. I just put it on and tried to cut it away with a craft knife.

I like that switch, I just went with a 1 port with a voltmeter and toggle. If you wire direct to battery you can use the toggle switch and charge while bike is off.

I actually just ordered one of those, want to hardwire a charger on the other side eventually

I agree, I am wiring in a separate usb/sae directly to the battery so I can charge even when the key is off.  I didn't think about how important that could be when I installed the original USB port... however I suppose it's nice to have options.

I ordered this one today and will wire it under the seat and into my tank bag.

After Garmin recently took back for a full refund their third POS Zumo XT GPS they've sent me over five whole months, I treated both my bikes to a new dedicated rugged cell phone GPS and got everything done on the T7 this morning.

Umidigi Bison 2 phone with no SIM card running OsmAnd mapping software, mounted up on a nice TackForm phone holder connected to a MotoPumps crossbar clamp. Unlike the XT and my previous Garmin which ignored many of them, this set-up actually routes me onto minor (fun) roads and will honestly take me the shortest distance from point A to B when I select that. Just over half the price of the XT for the whole set-up, and wish I'd done this a lot sooner.

That's a cool setup. Sorry you had such problems with Garmin XT's I have had mine for several years with no issues and now have the XT2. And with the Camera on that phone you can take photos or record your ride through your windshield

I share @jdub53 disdain for Garmin consumer gps units. With 25 years of experience using their aviation products,  I can say, they are second to none. On the other hand, Garmin consumer level gps units are buggy, non intuitive and some of the most frustrating units I've ever tried to navigate with.  When my Montana finally dies ( on my 3rd replacement) I'll probably go the phone route, looks good to me.

Installed a 48 tooth rear sprocket.  While not night and day different, it certainly feels like you can creep even slower in first at the expense of higher speed cruising.   Up next: stiffer front springs, which I've owned for several weeks now, just haven't had the time to install just yet.  That'll be the end of the mods for this season as long as I don't break anything 😄

Trailering the bike out to PA for some more intense off-road riding as long as the weather cooperates in the next month or so.  Looking forward to getting in over my head, lol.

What was your particular gripe with the Zumo XT?

I find the routing on mine strange

I have had an XT for a few years now and also find it a bit frustrating you can't actually navigate the true shortest route. For the most part though it works pretty well for most things I want to use it for.

The worst issue was the XT absolutely refused to acknowledge the existence of many minor roads (paved and unpaved), and often the simple route it produced (circuitous and on more major roads) when I selected a destination was the same whether I had Fastest Time or Shorter Distance selected, Adventurous Routing full on/full off, or anywhere in between. I could cite and show many, many examples, but this one was the straw that broke the camel's back a few weeks ago.

My cousin and I were riding in PA's Tuscarora state forest, and with no avoidances and Shorter Distance selected I set the destination as Fowler's Hollow state park which I knew wasn't far away. The XT came back with absurd routing of 44 miles (ref. the two XT screen shots below - green flag where I was and checkered flag the destination). Note the yellow track, which is actually the MABDR, yet the magenta line is where the XT was trying to send me.

7114291.png.465487a776914c368f840d1237f31100.png

I then took these pics of my cousin's Garmin 276cx GPS screen, which showed the true shorter distance/route to be a mere 9.28 miles through the state forest's well established and maintained dirt roads (again, yellow track is the MABDR):

20230711_123732.jpg.f75bafcd661851cfbfe5c59f1b8d6ea8.jpg

20230711_123747.jpg.f85a1ed3b96c3b61a04ad15237b11c05.jpg

Especially because this was my third Zumo XT in only five months (one power cable failed on my first ride, the first XT had worse routing issues than this one, etc., etc.), these supposed "new and improved" devices were hindering and not enhancing the fun of motorcycling on either of my bikes.

The Garmin customer support manager, with whom by now I'd become acquainted, didn't hesitate to agree to a full refund for both this last XT and the car kit I'd bought to use with it when I presented these same details to her.

One thing I found that works for me most of the time is to add a waypoint along the route I actually want to take, It can be a little annoying having to force it to do this though. I suspect we have the idiots following their GPS's into fields/lakes/down boat ramps etc to thank for the ultra safe conservative routing calculations that a lot of modern devices seem to make.
