What are the top five first upgrades that help the Tenere 700?

If I must have a top 5... then for my 80/20 road biased touring riding (for now) I would say in no particular order:

#1 - OEM crash bars

#2 - ACD bashplate

#3 - Rally Raid luggage racks

#4 - Oxford heated grips

#5 - Screen extender

Had my bike written off while parked and now I'm starting all over again. Nice opportunity to change what I didn't like or try new items that weren't previously available. Definitely bias to hard of roading so will of course be different from others. 

That being said, I will be doing some things the same. 

 

1- crash protection; skid plate, crash bars, hand guards.

Going with outback motortek skid plate again, cheaper than Camel and has recessed fasteners. But still very robust. I do like some aspects of the Camel gut guard but meh. Had the oem crash bars. Nice look, light, but also weaker. Going to try the bullet proof outback motortek ones. Empire racing has some very solid hand guards and be putting them on again. 

 

2-Camel anti bobble head, a must imo. 

 

3-suspension, doing the RR rear spring again, huge difference for me at 200lbs. This time around I'm going to pony up and do the RR revalve and springs on the squishy front. 

 

4-tail tidy and led signals. They make you more visible and that tail is asking to get smashed off. 

 

5-Camel high exhaust, had an aftermarket can and, with a tune, REALLY woke the bike up! Plus getting it higher saves the swing arm, and looks awesome! 

 

Honourable mentions, from Camel.. high fender cuz it's sexy as!  1 finger clutch and fork protectors and rear rack. 

Once I inevitably smash the mirrors I'll get the adventure ones.

Case covers, R&G.

USB charger with voltage read-out

And of course tyres.. 

Chain guide and protector

4L Rotopax

It would be nice if you could get your hands on the T7 that was damaged.  Lot's of good parts on it I'll bet.

I totally agree! It'll go the the icbc salvage yard and a licensed auctioneer will pick it up. I'm hoping to track it down because I'm pretty familiar with it.

The pics aren't very spectacular, a drunk backed over it and bent the bars, dented tank and a/m exhaust, broken plastics, dickered up the forks etc etc. 

If you're from BC, are you familiar with buying back a bike? I'm really interested. It's my understanding you need a special license tho.

No1 I think is get suspension set up for you… go with whatever you can afford… either get the standard stuff set up/tweeked as best you can… change springs etc or if you can go the whole hog and feel you need it get new forks and shock… suspension for me made the best changes…

Your best bet is to call them and tell them it's a special to you bike that you must get back.  You may be able to buy it once it's listed as salvage. Be relentless and appeal if they give you a hard time.  Now back to our regular programming.

  1. Added a rear OEM rack
  2. Replaced standard electric socket outlet with integrated voltmeter and 2x USB sockets
  3. Replaced the blank hole with a Merit socket
  4. Replaced the stock levers with milled CNC lever
  5. Added an adjustable height kit for the screen

5. Grab Rails (super difficult to pick up off the trail without them)

Where did u get the integrated voltmeter and merit socket?

  1. Aftermarket Seat to remove the stock Yamaha torture device.
    • I went with SeatConcepts Comfort Standard.
  2. Change the tires to be able to have some mild semblance of stability off-road.
    • I got the Motoz Tractionator GPS
  3. Unless you are an "average" sized person, swap the springs so you don't bottom out jumping off of a curb. (exaggeration, but not extraordinarily so)
    • I went with the K-Tech 6.9 front and 95 Rear. I'm 6'2, 280lb. 🤷🏻‍♂️
  4. Install a full exhaust to shave off several pounds, add a HP or two, and let the CP2 sing.
    • I installed the MaxTorqueCans full system with the Oval Carbon Fiber muffler.
  5. Install a RapidBike tuner to help with the extremely-lean tuning. This adds power and lowers temperatures a few degrees.
    • I did this and have only let it auto-tune. I haven't messed with it since installing it.

How do you like that camera system? I've read/watched every review I could find about the K5 and it just doesn't seem like it'd be worth a damn for action shots. Fair enough for "dash cam" purposes, but it's lack of image stabilization seems like a no go for anything else.

I haven't been able to source OEM crash bars here in the USA.  Have you been able to get them?  Was told they are on backorder "forever".

My thoughts? The upgrade that will help the Tenere the most, is probably to upgrade the rider itself..... 😉

Follow on and offroad courses, and practise.....

But before and even during the course and practice the crashbar and handguards may be at use and after when you get to a certain level you might get yourself in situations a bashplate is a proper upgrade.
I did the courses and ride often and that's not a guarantee you don't need it, sometimes because of it i even need it more.

 

For me the 3 things to start with are crashbars (i have the Heavy Duty Enduro), bashplate (AS) and handguards (Barkbusters).
I also like short levers and if i only could have 5 upgrades/ add ons i go for the Touratech WTE Extreme suspension.
That suspension cost an arm and a leg but for me it was worth every euro and has itself paid back a couple of times already.

My personal bang-for-the-buck first mods:

 

1. Ditch the passenger footpegs and the rubber inserts on the rider pegs.  The factory pegs aren't great, but aren't awful either, and hey... the cost is zero.

2. Flip the bar risers so the bars are forward a smidge (personal ergo preference)

3. Adding a GPS solution.  I love planning routes, and am completely spoiled by having GPS on my other bike

4. Tweak the factory suspension and see how far you can get with it.  If nothing else you'll improve the bike a bit probably.

5. Better tires if you're going to offroad.
