@jdub53 It freaks me out even looking at that ice. Do you use studded tires or are you just nuts...

I think it's not icy, it rather looks like wet, melting snow to me. Am I right?

Have ridden bicycles under similar conditions, has been no problem.

Edit: "slushy". That's the word I was looking for. We call it "sulzig" over here.

With decent tires it's not so bad even without studs, if you're cautious.  If it's slushy, it's even easier.  I mean, this was a normal day commuting to work in January:20220110_070201.thumb.jpg.11a3b2897df85d065e7b1b2d51fcea0d.jpg

Exactly.  Yeah, it's slippy, but not particularly worse than muddy dirt.  And probably *is* muddy dirt, underneath, if the tire tracks are any indication.

I nearly had the SW crash bars installed when on the last leg the crossbar fouled with the headers.  No amount of wriggling would allow the final LHS attachment bolt for them to go in.  I'm in contact with SWmototech to try and find a solution but I suspect the new Euro5 update exhaust where the catalyst is in front of engine just beyond the cylinder head may be the culprit.  I could grind about 1/4 off the width of the bar and make it fit but that's a bit rough.  I'll see what the boys in Europe say first.

views from the front and RHS.

Tenerider's right; mostly melting snow/slush but still a solid/slippery base at times. Made it a bit challenging some places, especially considering the slope I was on. I've encountered this type riding on other bikes, and it really makes picking your line and your clutch/throttle control imperative.  No tire studs, just good knobbies and momentum. (I didn't make it up the long hill on the GS in the second pic; that's where the rear started spinning about halfway up but it was fun trying)

Test fitted the new custom link pipe.  I have one more change I need to make to it, than I'll have it fabbed up in Titanium 🙂

Does anyone have any experience on how much mud you get up your back with the tail tidy?  I know on my RR the tidy allows mountains of filth to be flung up off a wet road.

A little.
But i guess it also depends on what tailtidy you have, some have still a piece of the fender and of course what country you live in.
In the UK for instance you don't have to worry about that with those pizza plate size number plates.

Never had an issue with mud sprayed on my back from this, but...

I disliked the extreme upward license plate mount angle of the Tusk tail tidy I'd bought, in part because it partially obscured the rear turn signals unless viewed from straight on. Prior to installation of the tail tidy, I bent the plate mount downward a bit but soon figured out that angle's purpose must have been to block rear tire mud from obscuring the brake light.

Because I wanted to retain the better visibility of the signals, instead of bending the plate mount upward again I instead fitted a small 1 & 1/2" extension at the bottom of the license plate which now keeps the brake light acceptably clean after mud encounters.

I installed a fresh set of Shinko 705 tires and new tubes at 16,000 miles.  I had a flat on the rear and destroyed the tube riding home on the flat for 10 miles.  The front tube was a little chaffed and kept as a spare.

And, for those who want to know……I ran this set of 705s 9000 miles front and rear.

Today. I rode it! Took advantage of Harley's misfortune. A local HD dealer  that closed down used to offer basic courses in their spare lot. Gives me the perfect place to practice. Worked on low speed maneuvers and threshold braking. Over the winter I installed fork preload spacers, gives a much improved brake feeling. I think it's likely due to the reduced amount of brake dive since it's sitting in the proper stroke. 👍

Picked up the new suspension with SKF non stick seals and a 5Nm stiffer rear spring
IMG_20220318_185631.thumb.jpg.ee38e735a9db5891cac9163b1d971694.jpg

Also added a grease nipple to the link system with some 1mm holes on the bottom just between the bearing and the seal, a tip by my suspension specialist.

And i bought a smart turn system from STS.
I don't want to have too much gadgets on this bike but i often forget the turn signal when i get from the pavement to the dirt.

Put on the @Camel ADV high mount fender kit. Was fairly straightforward really.

Only thing is these two rubber pads fell out from somewhere and I have no idea where from. Lol Anybody have any idea?
